The Mental Health Outreach Worker will assist people living in remote, rural and isolated villages and urban communities to strengthen their ability to understand and cope with mental health issues. The program will strive to improve communication between other mental health issues. The Mental Health Outreach Worker will target existing front line workers and individuals in these communities and encourage them to work in unison towards a long term goal of empowering people. The program will also strive to provide non-judgmental, safe, gender-sensitive healing environments including traditional healing ceremonies and alternative therapies. Ex: pipe ceremonies, smudging, etc. for youth, adults and elders.
Responsibilities
Provide support, counseling and referrals as needed to people with mental health issues
increase understanding regarding mental health by providing activities, traditional and alternative therapies and culturally relevant activities through:
Conducting workshops and outreach days
Working with the Local Action Team (Smithers Community Wellness Committee)
Learn about alternative therapies and adopt them into the program, or bring specialists in for clients.
Develop and maintain strong partnerships with youth workers and others helping organization who experience vicarious trauma and continuously deal with their client's loss and grief.
Continue networking with local organizations through committee meetings, events, workshops, and informing others of available services.
Submit monthly Board Reports, quarterly statistic reports for the Friendship Centre as well as bi-annual report for the Funder.
Qualifications
Minimum grade 12 education or equivalent
Ability to work with Microsoft Office Word & Excel
Effective written communication skills including the ability to prepare proposals and reports
Case management and confidential record keeping practices
Mental Health First Aid preferred
Aboriginal Focusing-Oriented Therapy & Complex Trauma training would be an asset
FASD Training would be an asset
Effective verbal and listening communication skills
Work independently and as a part of a team
The Mental Health Worker works 28 hours per week Monday - Thursday. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.
