Position purpose:
Under the authority of the Chief Operating Engineer (COE), the 2nd class Shift Engineer assists the COE in supervision and monitoring to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Power Plant and of HVAC and refrigeration equipment on campus.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Monitor the operation of all power plant equipment, and take action as required to ensure that the equipment operates safely and efficiently.
  • Direct, supervise, and train personnel under his/her responsibility.
  • As directed by the COE, operate and program the building monitoring system as per the schedule. Update and record changes to the central monitoring system, and processes work requests to ensure good air quality and comfortable ambient air environments on campus.
  • Coordinate equipment shutdowns and start-ups for preventive and corrective maintenance with the Electrical, Plumbing and Maintenance Division. Responsible for Power Plant equipment lockout and tag-out.
  • Operate equipment used to reduce energy consumption or minimize electrical peaks on campus as directed by the COE.
  • Keep daily and monthly power plant logs as directed, and fills out time sheets for own shift.
  • Use operational log book as specified by the Operating Engineers Act and related regulations, and record all requests pertaining to electrical, mechanical, plumbing and other trades, and to
  • control systems, in the maintenance management software.
  • Take appropriate action, as required and as directed, on fire alarm systems and all control systems, and answer telephone calls from the call center after regular working hours and on weekends.
  • Responsible for the security of, and access to, the Power Plant.
What you will bring:
  • Valid Ontario Second Class Operating Engineer license
  • Knowledge of building monitoring and central monitoring systems
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, including WHMIS, confined space, lock-out and tag-out, ladder safety, asbestos awareness and other safety-related legislation.
  • Must comply with the Operating Engineers Act and the Boiler and Pressure Vessels Act
  • Experience in operating and maintaining Power Plant equipment
  • Good interpersonal skills to collaborate with co-workers and management
  • Must be open, adaptable and proactive in learning new procedures
  • Ability to assume responsibility for a shift and its related equipment
  • Ability to lead one or more Operating Engineers assigned to a shift
  • Ability to perform tasks with minimum supervision
  • Bilingual French and English (oral and written expression)
