1.0 FTE Alternative Education Teacher - Take a Hike Program
Temporary: November 24, 2025 - June 30, 2026
NOTE: The successful candidate will lead the Take a Hike Program and therefore, planning, preparing and participating in overnight trips and weekly day trips into remote wilderness locations is a requirement. Weekly activities may include such activities as skiing, biking, hiking and canoeing.
Qualifications:
BC Certification
Bachelor of Education with a focus on Inclusive Education or equivalent training that includes coursework in the following areas:
students with diverse abilities and disabilities, including students with ASD
assessment/testing theory and practice
strategies for adapting and modifying curriculum to meet the diverse needs of students
Previous teaching experience in Inclusive Education at the secondary level
Previous successful experience teaching outdoor education at the secondary level is preferred
Expertise in a wide range of teaching and behavioural management strategies including skill development in social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication and social skills
Knowledge of methods for evaluating and selecting instructional materials suitable for students with a variety of diverse needs
Working knowledge of behaviour support planning and implementing safety plans
Knowledge and understanding of child and youth mental health issues
Ability to carry out a variety of assessments, including classroom observation, curriculum-based assessment and diagnostic teaching methods, administration and interpretation of norm- referenced assessment instruments to Level B
Ability to develop, implement and evaluate an IEP in consultation with classroom teacher(s), parents, students, staff and district and community resource personnel
Working knowledge of computer-based learning software (i.e. Read and Write, EquatIO, G Suite, Moodle, Microsoft Office apps, Microsoft Sharepoint etc.)
Working knowledge of assistive software (i.e. Boardmaker, SETBC, ARC BC, Lessonpix, iPage apps etc.)
Direct and support the work of Child & Youth Care Workers
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment
Strong organizational skills
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and classroom management skills

The annual salary for this position ranges from $60,337 to $111,450, with placement on the range based on length of service and qualifications in accordance with the collective agreement.
