POSITION SUMMARY:
Public Health Dietitians
are responsible for promoting and protecting the nutritional health and well-being of individuals and communities. The incumbent will utilize evidence-informed decision making to assess, plan and deliver programs and services with respect to food and food systems, nutrition, diet, and health. While reporting to the manager of the Healthy Communities Team, this position will provide consultation and support across the organization, providing nutritional and dietetic expertise to a variety of audiences. A preliminary focus will be supporting work related to children, youth, and municipal and community partners.
Responsibilities Include:
Participates in surveillance monitoring and conducts assessments to identify the general health, nutritional and dietetic needs of groups, communities, and populations, including priority populations.
Interprets and conveys current scientific information regarding food and food systems, nutrition, diet, and health and relevant strategies to local government, public, media, community agencies, and groups in various sectors.
Participates in the development of research questions, evaluation plans and tools, as well as the analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of results to health profession colleagues, key stakeholders, and the community.
Plans, coordinates, implements, and evaluates nutrition health promotion initiatives (i.e., nutrition education resources, healthy eating costing, presentations, media campaigns) and programs by applying evidence-based decision making, theoretical models, health equity principles, and best practice guidelines.
Initiates, develops, and fosters relationships with key community partners including, but not limited to, municipal administration, boards of education, law enforcement, business, non-profit organizations, resident coalitions, and others, to collaboratively engage in achieving health and well-being goals for residents related to public health.
Utilizes various strategies to build and strengthen community participation and improve capacity for action in order to encourage healthy public policy and supportive environments around shared health priorities.
Acts as a topic expert, consultant, trainer, liaison or mentor for staff, volunteers, students, dietetic interns and other public health professionals to ensure wide range of support to reach community health and well-being goals. Tasks can include instructing food literacy workshops and providing support to a wide variety of community audiences, and/or equipping other staff to do so.
Builds internal capacity to support delivery of programming related to nutritional health and well-being, including provision of consultation service and training to other agency staff.
Establishes and maintains partnerships with relevant nutrition agencies, provincial networks, community of practices, and working groups.
Responsible for professional development to maintain competence as a registered dietitian in public health, as well as professional development related to effective public health practice.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
Bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition from a recognized university.
Current certificate of registration from the College of Dietitians of Ontario.
Experience
Minimum two years of related experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
Strong organizational, and communication skills including chairing meetings with multiple stakeholders to achieve results.
Ability to manage multiple priorities.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and act with tact and discretion.
Ability to work with a variety of populations.
Ability to teach concepts using a variety of methods and facilitate workshops,
Computer proficiency (Microsoft Office) and a demonstrated ability to learn new software programs.
Immunizations must be up-to-date and maintained in compliance with all applicable SEHU policies.
Valid Ontario Driver's license and access to a vehicle.
Satisfactory Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check.
Working Conditions:
Interact with a variety of clients in person, by email and by phone. Normal working hours are 8:3AM - 4:30PM with occasional alternate hours including working evenings and/or weekends to meet service needs several times per year. Occasional travel within the region is required.
