The Vulnerable Person's Lawyer will provide a range of legal services from summary advice to full-service litigation representation for persons who are vulnerable because of physical, emotional, or intellectual disability in civil areas not previously covered by Legal Aid. This position will provide legal services to vulnerable people who may be subject to restriction of liberties under the Adult Protection Act, the Mental Health Act and Public Guardian and Trustee proceedings. The position reports to the Director of Legal Aid.


Duties will include but are not limited to:




Provide initial legal advice to vulnerable persons; Represent the vulnerable person before Courts and administrative boards (examples: Adult Protection matters, Guardianship matters; Mental Health Review Board hearings); Conduct research and perform legal analysis; Serve collaboratively as Legal Aid representative on internal and external committees addressing access to justice; Work closely with management and support staff on matters of intake, eligibility assessment, conflict avoidance, caseload management, data collection and reporting; The lawyer is expected to provide these legal services with minimal supervision; and Other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:




Graduation from a recognized law school and membership in the Law Society of Prince Edward Island is required; Must have extensive experience as a practicing lawyer, either in private practice or in the public sector; Applicants who do not have extensive experience may be considered for a provisional appointment; Sensitivity to the needs of people who are vulnerable because of physical, emotional or intellectual disability; Effective skills for personal communication across a very wide range of socioeconomic levels; A solid capacity to maintain composure in the midst of hostile conflicts and highly emotional situations; Strong negotiation, mediation and litigation skills; Crisis management skills; Ability to work both independently in a self-directed manner and as an effective member of a team; Successful applicant must provide proof of a successful Criminal Record Check prior to employment.
