SUMMARY:

The Early Childhood Development Worker reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Program Supervisor - Child and Youth Health Team.





The Early Childhood Development Worker delivers Early Childhood Development (ECD) services in Six Nations Community Elementary Schools, in collaboration with partners within the Six Nations of the Grand River Community. To provide individual and small group support in collaboration with Child and Youth Health Team. To provide supports throughout the year to infants/children 0-6 years and their families in collaboration with programs under the Child and Youth Health portfolio and community partners.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:




Registered Early Childhood Educator or Early Childhood Educator Equivalency as set by the College of Early Childhood Educators. Must have a minimum of six months demonstrated ability in providing early interventions in the lives of children and their families.

OR


Successful completion of a recognized Child and Youth Care Diploma Program with at least 3 years of experience working directly with children and families Member of the College of Early Childhood Educators in good standing. Possess a Class G License Current Standard First Aid including CPR Level C

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:





Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Program Supervisor - Child and Youth Health Team.




PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:





To deliver Early Childhood Development (ECD) services in Six Nations Community Elementary Schools, in collaboration with partners within the Six Nations of the Grand River Community.



To provide individual and small group support in collaboration with Child and Youth Health Team.



To provide supports throughout the year to infants/children 0-6 years and their families in collaboration with programs under the Child and Youth Health portfolio and community partners.




KEY

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:




Technical Functions:




Provides advocacy for client referrals and works collaboratively with school staff to complete and submit referrals to Child and Youth Health and/or Community partners Supports successful transitions for children entering or returning-to-school, in collaboration with families and school staff Works collaboratively with school staff and the Child and Youth Health team to design and implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in the classrooms Maintains a current record on each client; including a Plan of Care and adheres to all privacy requirements for electronic charting Follows procedures for initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing service when appropriate Develops and implements individual and group programming for children to build developmental skills at home and school Supports children on an individual basis when a referral to ECD is received. Assists the Program Supervisor in annual program evaluations Supports the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Coordinator in connecting families that require service and serves as a liaison with Six Nation Schools.



Communications Functions:




Provides community education through in-service sessions, programming, and presence at community events Provides client/family education and training Communicates relevant information and updates regularly to parents/legal guardians Maintains clear communication with school staff and has good working relationships with teachers. Assists in delivering culturally appropriate curriculum for Six Nations Elementary Schools, under the guidance of the Program Supervisor Co-ordinates program activities with school administrators, professional staff, and other relevant community agencies Collaborates with the Early Childhood Development team in the delivery of client care Participates in program development and accreditation activities Attends meetings as required: staff meetings, committee meetings, and community partner meetings. Ensures all incidents are appropriately reported Wears a Six Nations Elected Council identification badge.



Administrative Functions

:


Submits monthly reporting of stats and yearly reports to the Program Supervisor Completes and submits: leave forms, travel forms, performance appraisals and work plans in accordance with Six Nations Elected Council policies and procedures Ensures proper filing of documents electronically and /or hardcopy Ensures that the Early Childhood Development Program services are consistent with agency and program philosophy, policies and procedures. Assists Program Supervisor in maintaining an up-to-date inventory of program supplies and reports and disposes of any damaged property. Assumes responsibility to maintain good standing with regulatory bodies



Other Functions

:


Performs other job-related duties as may reasonably be required by the Early Childhood Development worker. Provides support for the Six Nations Emergency Measures Plan by ensuring awareness of the Emergency Measures Plan and assistance as instructed by the Director of Health Services



WORKING CONDITIONS:




Work requires physical activity and mental stress; requires working inside/outside; requires travel; requires extensive interactions with the public, who at times may be hostile of irate; subject to interruptions, deadlines and unscheduled hours.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:





Minimum Requirements:

Other Related Skills:


Knowledge of childhood development, trauma-informed care, strengths-based approach, theories of counselling and counselling techniques; assessment methods and practices; classroom management techniques; universal design for learning; nutrition; evaluation techniques and human resource management i.e. reality therapy, domestic violence, substance abuse, death and dying, family dynamics, parenting skills, crisis intervention, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder etc. Knowledge of the Indian Act (with specific reference to education), and Child and Family Services Act (with specific reference to First Nations) an asset. Previous experience facilitating Parenting Education, Anti-Bullying Prevention, conflict resolution, and anger management (for children) an asset. Teaching experience and/or teaching certification an asset. Knowledge of Iroquois language, culture and history an asset. Computer skills in Microsoft Office Word & Excel, Outlook and Electronic Medical Records. Good knowledge of the Six Nations Community and highly sensitive to Six Nations culture.

Errors in judgement and in the conduct of duties could lead to loss of credibility, poor public relation, confusion, duplication of effort and misinformation being given to the Director of Health Services, Human Services Committee, Six Nations Elected Council, Government Agencies and the public.




CONTROL:





Guiding principles set by Health Services Department and Six Nations Elected Council. Works within the administrative policies and procedures established by the Six Nations Elected Council for the Health Services Department and other legislation provided by the respective governments.
