Job Description

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:





Reports to and works under the direct supervision of the Tsi Non:we Ionnakeratstha/Ona:grahsta' Maternal and Child Centre Supervisor.




PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:





To provide breastfeeding support and assistance to Indigenous families through prenatal education, hands on support in home or office, breastfeeding promotional activities, and other forms of community outreach.




DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:




TECHNICAL FUNCTIONS:




+ Provide breastfeeding support and assistance during office hours and after hours on an agreed upon basis. + Set up protocols with Lactation consultants for consultation purposes.
+ Set up protocols with local hospitals to enable visitation in the hospital during the crucial first hours to help initiate breastfeeding.
+ Identify and manage common breastfeeding problems.
+ Identify abnormal breastfeeding complications and make referrals when appropriate.
+ Actively promote breastfeeding in the community using outreach activities and various forms of media.
+ Assist with monthly breastfeeding support group.
+ Provide culturally appropriate care and incorporate Traditional knowledge, medicines, and practices into the client's care.
+ Adhere to and promote the Health and Safety standards pertaining to universal precautions.
+ Document accurately and thoroughly client information within the established charting requirements.
+ Works cooperatively with the established Traditional Medicine provider, students, staff and other relevant health and/or social services workers/agencies.
+ Develop and deliver prenatal breastfeeding education and other applicable programming as identified by the Tsi Non:we Ionnakeratstha Ona:grahsta' Supervisor.



COMMUNICATION FUNCTIONS:




+ Shall meet when required with the Grandparents Group (Elders Committee) to seek clarification, and recommendations in relation to traditional knowledge and practices and ethical issues pertaining to clients. + Represent the Tsi Non:we Ionnakeratstha/Ona:grahsta' Maternal and Child Centre in a highly professional and positive manner in the community.
+ Ensure that all communication with personnel is clear, concise, and appropriate in relation to the issue/subject.



ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS:




+ Prepare and gather statistical data as required to meet funding requirements. + Maintain a strong working relationship with the Supervisor through regular contact as needed, to ensure the Supervisor is aware of individual related issues/needs.
+ Attend monthly staff meetings and other meetings as deemed necessary.
+ Develop and submit annual workplans and quarterly reports to the Tsi Non:we Ionnakeratstha Ona:grahsta' Supervisor.



OTHER FUNCTIONS:




+ Any other related duties as may be required by the Supervisor of the Tsi Non:we Ionnakeratstha/Ona:grahsta' Maternal and Child Centre. + Provides support for the Six Nations Emergency Measures Plan by ensuring awareness of the Emergency Measures Plan and assistance as instructed by the Director of Health Services.

Work has a high public profile, Indigenous midwifery focus, extensive interaction with the public; subject to deadlines, interruptions; ability to prioritize, take direction, work independently, work as a team member, develop/identify and initiate organizational or programming that will enhance services and effectiveness, cope with many demands and time restraints.




WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:




With the Tsi Non:we Ionnakeratstha/Ona:grahsta' Maternal and Child Centre Supervisor Is under supervision and receives direction and guidance from the Supervisor in the provision of community breastfeeding services. With Tsi Non:we Ionnakeratstha/Ona:grahsta' Maternal and Child Centre Indigenous Midwives Works in conjunction with the Indigenous Midwifery Practice in providing breastfeeding support services to Indigenous clients/families.



With the Tsi Non:we Ionnakeratstha/Ona:grahsta' Maternal and Child Centre Staff





Maintains a courteous, respectful, cooperative, and team-like relationship with all staff. Works in conjunction with the Secretary/Receptionist in the coordination and maintenance of client services and needs.




With Other Staff





Maintains courtesy, cooperation, respect, and teamwork with all staff.




With the Community





Represents and promotes Tsi Non:we Ionnakeratstha/Ona:grahsta' Maternal and Child Centre interests; works in a courteous, respectful, cooperative, positive, and initiative-taking manner.




With External Agencies





Represents and promotes Six Nations' interests relative to Six Nations Health Services; seeks to develop close working relationships with all agencies pertinent to the health and well-being of all clients.




KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:





Minimum Qualifications


Graduate of a recognized post-secondary education program that is at least 2 years in length and pertains to maternal and child/newborn health OR a graduate of a recognized post-secondary education program which is at least 2 years in length anda minimum of 5 years' experience working in the maternal and child/newborn health field. Strong knowledge of breastfeeding including physiology, proper latch and positions, common breastfeeding problems and solutions, identification and appropriate management of abnormal breastfeeding complications, breast milk expression and special breastfeeding situations such as multiple delivery. Mature disposition that promotes acceptance and trust in clients. Knowledge of Indigenous Midwifery, Indigenous birthing practices and ceremonies and can demonstrate knowledge of integrated traditional and medical maternity systems. Supports and promotes team building and is an active team member. Some experience in program development and delivery. Willing to work flexible hours as deemed necessary by the needs of the clients. Ability to successfully pass a police clearance check. Valid Driver's license and insurance. Demonstrate excellent communication skills.




Other Preferred Qualifications


Ability to prioritize and make sound, well based decisions within a short amount of time. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills appropriate for dealing with clients, medical staff, and other team members. Understands the organizational structure of the Tsi Non:we Ionnakeratstha/Ona:grahsta,' Six Nations Health Services, Six Nations Elected Council and the lines of authority that exist within this structure. Ability to communicate personal needs and aspirations effectively. Ability to solve problems effectively and ability to work with tact and discretion. Good knowledge of Six Nations Community and highly sensitive to Six Nations culture.



IMPACT OF ERROR:





Errors in performing duties could result in loss of credibility, harm, or injury to the public or legal/financial liability to the Six Nations Elected Council. Errors in conduct could result in embarrassment to the Six Nations Elected Council, Six Nations Health Services and the Tsi Non:we Ionnakeratstha/Ona:grahsta' Maternal and Child Centre; loss of public confidence and unnecessary conflict leading to lack of trust.




CONTROL:





Guiding principles set by the Tsi Non:we Ionnakeratstha/Ona:grahsta' Maternal and Child Centre, Six Nations Health Services Department and the Six Nations Elected Council.



Must work within the administrative policies and procedures established by the Six Nations Elected Council.



Must work within the policies, procedures and protocols established by the Tsi Non:we Ionnakeratstha/Ona:grahsta' Maternal and Child Centre.



Must work within the Six Nations Health Services Mission, Vision and Value Statement and the Client Bill of Rights established by the Six Nations Health Services Department.
