Your Opportunity:Alberta Health Services (AHS) has an exciting medical leadership opportunity for a physician with expertise in Public Health and Preventive Medicine to join our team as a Zone Medical Officer of Health (ZMOH). You will play a crucial role in preventing and addressing public health threats, advancing health equity, and working with partners to support people and their communities to be as healthy as possible. With legislated accountabilities under the Public Health Act, MOHs are responsible for investigating and controlling communicable diseases, preparing for and responding to emergencies and disasters, and addressing environmental health threats. As a ZMOH, you will play a pivotal role in protecting and promoting the health of Albertans in a geographic area of the province. ZMOHs provide leadership and support to Zone and Provincial public health teams in identifying local health needs and addressing current and emerging public health challenges. As a clinical expert, you will lead responses to individual and population-level health issues, champion prevention approaches within an integrated health system, and serve as a medical consultant to physicians, other healthcare providers, and a host of other stakeholders including local communities, school authorities, and many others. ZMOHs are members of the Clinical Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, ultimately accountable to the Senior MOH. In this capacity you will work with other Zone and Provincial MOHs to advance department priorities and collaborate with the Indigenous Wellness Core to help close the gap in Indigenous health outcomes. Promote health across the lifespan, focusing on priority areas such as sexual and reproductive health, oral health, and the health and wellbeing of parents, children, and youth. Work to prevent and manage communicable diseases, outbreaks, and environmental threats to health. Prepare for and respond to public health emergencies and disasters. Develop and improve programs and services aimed at preventing disease and injury. Coordinate early detection and treatment efforts through population-based cancer and newborn screening programs. Communicate essential health information to community partners, decision-makers and the public. Provide clinical and public health expertise and leadership in the development of public health programs and services. Collaborate with the Indigenous Wellness Core and Zone partners in achieving the AHS Indigenous Health Commitments: Roadmap to Wellness. Leverage the Healthier Together initiative to promote population health through partnerships, capacity building, and support for locally-led interventions with communities, schools, workplaces, and health services.
