Job Description


Overview

This highly rewarding position, primarily through coordinating the Richmond Youth Media Program, provides support and aids in the transition of youth into media arts opportunities, strengthening their social connections and leadership skills and connection to other support services. This unique position performs this innovative community based youth work in the City of Richmond\xe2\x80\x99s Media Lab. The job involves the establishment of mentorship-based relationships with youth, and the development and implementation of media arts-based programs and services designed to interest and meet individual needs. Youth work is delivered within a service-based framework to achieve outcomes consistent with the City\xe2\x80\x99s Arts Strategy and follows the recommendations of the City\xe2\x80\x99s Youth Service Plan, Where Youth Thrive. The position also provides community and corporate digital media program and event support.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop a professional, positive relationship of mutual trust, respect and caring with youth, generally, but not limited to 13-24 years of age.
  • Develop, implement, and lead media arts-based activities.
  • Network and collaborate with other youth-serving agencies in the community; refer program members to community services when appropriate.
  • Facilitate and develop opportunities to transition youth from 1-1 mentoring situations to group or peer interactions.
  • Develop strategies to promote opportunities for youth.
  • Foster leadership development through volunteer initiatives.
  • Solicit feedback from program members; utilize feedback to refine program activities.
  • Lead annual grant-writing and reporting requirements.
  • Liaise with City staff, government and non-government agencies.
  • Maintain and utilize Media Lab hardware and software for programs and events
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of methods, practices, policies and procedures relevant to work within an outreach focus.
  • Ability to communicate with and relate to a diverse constituency of youth.
  • Sounds knowledge and commitment to the philosophy of asset building using a strength-based and developmental approach.
  • Knowledge of youth mental health and substance use issues.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with other youth serving professionals outside the City of Richmond.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with agents of government and non-government organizations.
  • Ability to work both independently and interdependently while exercising sound judgement and initiative.
  • Ability to work comfortably in the Mac OS platform.
  • Proven media arts abilities (i.e. music production, graphic design, filmmaking) and the willingness to develop additional skills on an ongoing basis would be an asset.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain correspondence, records and reports.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Ability to function and deal appropriately with unusual situations.
  • Working knowledge of popular youth culture.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Diploma in Arts, Recreation, Child and Youth Care, Social Sciences, Criminology or related studies, combined with a minimum of 1 year full-time experience in the development and delivery of activity or learning based programs, 1 year full-time applied leadership experience and 2 years related full-time field experience working with hard-to reach youth in a community setting OR an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
  • Cultural Diversity and Special Needs experience an asset.
  • Standard or Emergency First Aid Certificate preferred.
  • Successful completion of a vulnerable sector Police Information check.
  • CPR Certificate preferred.
Working Conditions:

Duties are performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, as well as evenings and weekend shifts. May encounter upset or behaviourally challenged youth.
