Position Overview:

We\'re looking for positive and energetic role models to help lead after-school and/or weekend youth programs. As part of our City of Kitchener Youth Services team, you will work with your Team Lead and fellow leaders to deliver indoor recreational programming such as sports, arts and crafts, and games and/ or leadership development and life skills programs for youth ages 10-17 at community centres in a fun and relaxed indoor environment.

Employment Dates: From September 15, 2023 to June 15, 2024

Hours of Work: Hours of work vary, evenings and weekends, 3-24 hours per week

Training Dates: September 12-14, 6pm-9pm

Work is performed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations to mitigate risk to self and others.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead and participate in various youth activities such as sports, arts and crafts, games, cooking, life skills etc. Specialized program leaders will assist in leading focused activities such as basketball/sports skills and drills, cooking lessons, art lessons, drama lessons.
  • Role-model positive behavior for youth (including teamwork, listening, responsibility, initiative, and sportsmanship)
  • Implement program plans as designed by Youth Coordinators
  • Support youth in their efforts to try new activities, develop new skills.
  • Strive to ensure all youth are engaged and included in activities.
  • Monitor youth interactions and activities at all times, ensure the safety and enjoyment of participants through communication and adherence to program and facility rules, and address unsafe and unacceptable behavior.
  • Assist youth participants to work together to resolve problems and conflicts.
  • Assist with the set-up and take down of program equipment and supplies and ensure safe use, condition, and storage of equipment.
  • Complete records and reports including program registration, accident/incident reports, damage reports, and safety checklists.
  • Provide first aid as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Minimum level of education - partial completion of secondary school education (or equivalent)
  • Prior experience working or volunteering with youth in a group setting (minimum of 1 month).
  • Youth Leaders must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification
  • Satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Reference Check (issued as of August 15, 2023 for new leaders). Any related costs are the sole responsibility of the applicant.
  • Reliable transportation to work location.
  • Must be reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
