JOB PURPOSE: The Youth Addiction Counsellor works within a multi-disciplinary team to provide culturally appropriate, crisis intervention, assessment, prevention, referral and follow-up services for Enoch's youth. By weaving together western medicine and traditional wellness practices the counsellor plays a pivotal role in supporting youth that are experiencing addiction and mental health related difficulties, navigate the complex challenges they face while supporting their emotional well-being, resilience, and personal growth. By facilitating a safe and supportive environment, they empower the youth to explore and address their addiction and mental health concerns, developing personalized treatment plans using a variety of trauma informed modalities, coping strategies, that build healthy coping strategies that support recovery.
Services and supports will be extended to include family, guardians, or other caregivers as needed or requested while engaging the youth and community through individual/group counselling, psycho-educational programming, and workshop interventions. This dedication to promoting mental health awareness initiatives at the community level contributes to destigmatizing mental illnesses, and supporting a community where young people feel valued, understood, and supported on their journey toward mental wellness. Close collaborations with other health and support services will be built and maintained in our collective effort to deliver a comprehensive, end-to-end continuum of Indigenous addiction and mental health services.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
oConducts intakes, completes case histories and formulates assessments with youth and their families to inform their care plan and therapeutic goals
oApproaches to healing include family-based interventions, using a person-centred, strength-based, trauma-informed approach.
oProvision of direct clinical care and assessment to youth with mild to moderate mental health challenges through individual and group interventions.
oSupports youth program participants with more significant mental health challenges, particularly in relation to substance use, facilitating access to healing/treatment programs as needed.
oCreate and nurture a safe therapeutic environment, providing therapeutic interventions appropriate for the youth development.
oEngage parents, guardians, educators, Elders and Knowledge Keepers and/or other adults involved in youth's circle of care by providing psychoeducational presentations or workshops that support the goals of the care plan (i.e. parent-child communication, youth development and guidance, coping skills and behaviour management)
oProvides information on and referral to other community service providers, resources and professionals as required
oMaintains program equipment and supplies related to the play, art and cultural components of the program.
oAttends team meetings and multidisciplinary meetings, case conferences and clinical supervision as required.
oAttends related education programs and workshops to maintain a high standard of knowledge and respond to client needs.
oMaintains accurate program documentation and confidential files as per agency and accreditation standards/requirements.
oProvides monthly reports to the Mental Health Manager and/or the Senior Manager of Wellness Branch on departmental progress in the above areas.
oParticipates actively as an Enoch representative in collaborative care networks and participates in Enoch community activities, including traditional ceremonies and cultural events.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS:
oA bachelor's degree in addiction, social work, psychology, psych nursing. An equivalent combination of education, training& experience may be considered.
oMinimum 2 years experience in mental health service delivery, preferably on a First Nations community or with Indigenous people.
oExperience working within the perimeters of the Alberta Mental Health Act
oAdditional experience, training and/or certification in therapeutic modalities specific to child and youth counselling including play therapy, art therapy, drama therapy, equine therapy, land-based teaching etc.
oCurrent practicing registration with the applicable professional governing body in Alberta.
oValid Alberta Driver's License
oSatisfactory Criminal Records Check
WORKING CONDITIONS: The Youth Mental Health Counsellor will work in an office environment and is required to work 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday. May be required to work evenings and weekends, travel may be required. While adhering to the Enoch Cree Nation Human Resources Policy & Procedure Manual.
