The Yard Assistant / Crane Operator is responsible for supporting daily yard operations, including the safe handling, movement, and organization of shipping containers and cargo. This role requires operating cranes for container lifts, assisting drivers with loading/unloading, maintaining yard safety, updating inventory systems, and handling occasional driving tasks for company-related work.
Key Responsibilities
Yard Duties:
Assist in the movement, organization, and staging of containers in the yard.
Guide trucks during loading/unloading to ensure safe placement.
Support with container checks, inventory tracking, and yard organization.
Maintain yard cleanliness and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
Assist in securing containers and equipment as required.
Crane Operation Duties:
Safely operate cranes to lift, move, and position containers and cargo.
Inspect crane before and after use, reporting any issues promptly.
Follow load charts, weight limitations, and safety protocols during lifts.
Communicate with Yard Assistants and Drivers for safe and precise movements.
Perform basic crane maintenance and record container movements.
Additional Duties:
Use computer systems to update inventory and maintain records.
Driving required for local errands, container checks, and other operational needs (fuel costs will be compensated).
Remain open and willing to learn more about logistics and transportation operations.
Qualifications & Skills
High school diploma or equivalent.
Traning will be provided for Crane Operation
Valid driver's license with clean driving record (required).
Previous yard/warehouse or container handling experience preferred.
Forklift or other equipment certification is an asset.
Basic computer skills for data entry and inventory updates.
Strong safety awareness and knowledge of yard protocols.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Physically fit and able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs when required.
Work Environment
Outdoor yard and terminal operations, exposed to weather conditions.
Shift-based work; may include evenings, weekends, or overtime.
Occasional driving to company-related sites (fuel compensated).
Requires use of PPE (steel-toe boots, safety vest, helmet, gloves).
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $17.20-$20.00 per hour
Expected hours: 20 - 40 per week
