THE OPPORTUNITY:

As the Writer you will be responsible for sourcing, writing, editing and posting digital assets - weather, news, and video - for all The Weather Network platforms. Using editorial judgment and skills as a journalist, and working closely with broadcast, digital and freelance editorial resources, you will generate news and video assets for audience consumption. In addition, you will be tasked with conceptualizing and delivering an active weather plan that promotes content across all platforms: web, mobile, broadcast. The role will include researching, writing and editing multiple original content items per day for both active weather and weather adjacent topics.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAY TO DAY LOOK LIKE:

• Source and verify digital content for publishing that aligns with editorial mandate.
• Write and publish original content to The Weather Network digital
• Communicate with Video and Editorial Lead and Meteorological Producers to receive assignments and coordinate publishing priorities
• Ensure entire index page is refreshed with new content, articles, galleries & video each shift
• Source and post content from third-party providers that fits with content strategy
• Monitor analytics and ensure daily objectives are being met
• Conduct interviews with sources and experts upon request
• Helping to publish and maintain a weather-specific blog
• Work with Video and Editorial Lead and Meteorological Producer to ensure all relevant wire copy and social media promotion is complete
• Geo-target web content (namely weather content) articles
• Represent writing content at weather-planning and seasonal forecast planning sessions

WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO HAVE:

• Excellent news judgment
• Journalism degree/ diploma or similar field of study
• Ability to write headlines, choose photos/videos and package content quickly and accurately in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
• Knowledge of the weather, the environment and global geography
• Proven video editing skills using industry-standard video editing solutions
• Understanding of multiple digital formats and codecs an asset but not required
• Photo and video editing skills an asset
• Knowledge of the weather, the environment and global geography Social media savvy
• Team player with the ability to follow direction, as well as work without supervision
• Excellent organizational skills, strong communication skills
• Ability to take initiative and effectively prioritize tasks
• Ability to work a flexible work week - weekend and night work involved
