Position Description:
This Peer Support Worker position is designed for individuals with lived experience who have navigated complex systems such as housing, mental health, justice, or social services, and who are now seeking to build meaningful employment skills. Recognizing that systemic barriers can impact access to traditional employment, this role provides enhanced support and mentorship to ensure success. The position offers hands-on guidance, professional development, and training opportunities to strengthen both personal and professional growth, while empowering participants to draw on their lived experience to support others.
Under the direct supervision of the Managers of Women's Housing Departments [MB2] and the general supervision of the Director of Harm Reduction the Peer Support Diversion Co-Ordinator will provide support from a trauma-informed, harm reduction and client-centered approach to women and families. Working in collaboration with all YWCA Regina's Women's Housing teams, the Peer Support Worker will help to foster trust, empowerment, and community connection. This role focuses on supporting participants to build stability, access services, and strengthen their overall well-being and includes:
Responsibilities:
Service Delivery
Connecting and building relationships as the first point of contact for walk-in clients at the YWCA Regina
Direct women and families into appropriate YWCA Regina programs (Outreach, Shelters, or Residences)
Support women using Outreach and other YWCA Regina Women's Housing services
Support women in developing life skills, including budgeting, self-advocacy, and household management and job readiness
Facilitate peer support groups, workshops, and community-building activities that promote empowerment and resilience
Support women and families to navigate government and community programs
Maintain positive relationships with other frontline teams working with our target population, with a focus on agencies providing services for individuals impacted by trauma, mental health challenges and addictions
Actively work towards developing familiarity with Indigenous cultural traditions and engagement with Indigenous people and communities
Establish/maintain positive relationships with other professionals in the community including police, mental health support teams, and emergency services
Follow common case planning process with each individual as outlined by YWCA Regina Women's Housing departments, including:
o Intake /assessment process
o Person-centered case plans, goal setting and advocacy
o Follow-up assessments and regular check-in as needed
o Provide warm referrals to community agencies and programs in support of individual's needs and activities
Administrative Duties
Maintain detailed and accurate reporting
Assist women by providing information and helping to fill out various forms such as applications for housing and income assistance
Conduct assessments, track referrals, and contacts
Provide verbal and written reports to appropriate area team members
Cooperate with team members to ensure other administrative needs are met
Qualifications:
This position is grounded in the value of lived experience. The Peer Support Worker has personally navigated challenges such as homelessness, systemic barriers, mental health, substance use, or involvement in the justice system and uses that experience to support others. This is a non-clinical, relationship-based role that emphasizes empathy, mutual respect, and the belief that positive change is possible for everyone.
Knowledge of supports, community services, and barriers faced by women experiencing homelessness
Ability to de-escalate situations, respond calmly to conflict, and support participants in problem-solving
Experience in peer support, outreach, or advocacy roles is an asset
Knowledge about mental health issues and substance use disorders (Naloxone training is an asset)
Ability to work independently and with a team
Accurate record keeping ability and basic computer skills
Organizational and time management skills to handle multiple tasks and priorities.
Awareness of colonization and the intergenerational impacts it has had on women and families
Respect for women and children of various backgrounds
