The Wolastoqey Tribal Council Inc. (WTCI) is a not-for-profit organization whose role is to provide capacity-building opportunities for its member communities within the traditional Wolastoqey territory in New Brunswick. These member communities consist of Matawaskiye (Madawaska Maliseet First Nation), Wotstak (Woodstock First Nation), Bilijk (Kingsclear First Nation), Sitansisk (St. Mary's First Nation), and Welamukotuk (Oromocto First Nation).

Overview:

The Wolastoqey Tribal Council (WTCI) seeks to develop and implement a Wolastoqey-led Victim service program, with the primary aim to advance a range of projects and activities that increase support and assistance to Wolastoqey victims and survivors of crime. These services must be tailored to the needs of victims and survivors of crime.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Health Services Director and Justice Coordinator, the Victim Services Navigator will play a central role in developing and delivering a culturally safe, trauma-informed, and wholistic support service for Wolastoqey victims and survivors of crime. In alignment with community values, the role will center around healing, advocacy, safety, and connection to culturally relevant services and supports.

Key responsibilities include:

Assist in the design, development, and implementation of a First Nations-led Victim Services Program grounded in Wolastoqey culture, values, and teachings.

Conduct environmental scans to identify existing community and provincial services and resources relevant to victims of crime.

Engage in meaningful dialogue and consultation with community members, including Elders, Knowledge Keepers, women, youth, and 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, to inform program development and delivery.

Assist in developing and updating culturally appropriate service directories (e.g., "Directory of Services of Abuse in First Nations Communities in New Brunswick").

Provide direct support to victims and their families, including emotional support, safety planning, and referrals to culturally safe services.

Assist victims and their families with access to mental health care, medical/nursing care, cultural care, and provide referrals and follow-up as needed.

Accompany individuals to police interviews, court appearances, or other justice-related appointments as requested.

Support victims in navigating and registering with federal and provincial victim services (e.g., Victim Services Canada).

Assist with the preparation of victim impact statements and provide court accompaniment as needed.

Build and maintain trusted relationships with Wolastoqey community organizations, health and social service providers, Elders, and Indigenous and non-Indigenous agencies.

Strengthen and support partnerships between Wolastoqey communities and justice, health, and social service systems.

Work with existing domestic and family violence services at the community and provincial levels to coordinate care and improve responses.

Collaborate with child and family services, community health centers, and culturally specific support networks to enhance wraparound services.

Facilitate knowledge-sharing sessions, educational workshops, and community events focused on addressing and preventing violence.

Develop informational and culturally relevant materials to raise awareness of victim services and community safety.

Promote the availability of supports through community outreach and advocacy.

Maintain clear, confidential records of client interactions, referrals, and services provided in alignment with privacy and cultural protocols.

Track program activities, outcomes, and community feedback to support ongoing evaluation and improvement.

Provide regular updates and reports to the Health Services Director and Justice Coordinator.

Education and Experience:

Post-secondary education in Social Work, Psychology, Criminology, Health Professions, Indigenous Studies, or a related field; a combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.

Minimum 2 years of experience working in victim services, crisis intervention, mental health, family violence prevention, justice-related services, health services, or community-based healing supports.

Experience with and knowledge of Wolastoqey communities, culture, language, traditions, and kinship is an asset.
Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed, wholistic, and culturally safe approaches to supporting Indigenous victims and survivors of crime.

Experience supporting individuals navigating complex systems (e.g., health, legal, child welfare).

Skills and Attributes:

Strong communication, listening, empathy, advocacy, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and maintain confidentiality.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle with the ability to travel.
A salary range of $55,000-$75,000 is offered, commensurate with education level, qualifications and experience. Wolastoqey Tribal Council Inc. offers benefits to our employees. Working location is 35 Dedham St., Sitansisk (St. Mary's First Nation, NB).
