Position: Mechanical Designer Co-op and Mechanical Assembly Co-op
Reports To: Engineering Manager and Mechanical Assembly Group Leader
Mecsmart Systems Inc (MSI),
part of Innovative Automation Group of Companies, is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Co-op Student and a Mechanical Assembly Co-op Student for the Winter 2026 term to work out of our
Newmarket
location.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Completes the mechanical design and detailing of fixtures, jigs, and smaller machines. Create mechanical designs that are economical to produce, easy to assemble and simply maintained
Assists other designers with the mechanical design and detailing of larger systems
Completes "as built" drawing updates on machinery when required, reviews updates/changes with the other departments when required
Manages all assigned tasks in a neat and timely fashion while striving to maintain budgeted hours
Communicate project concerns, project status, and design solutions with management, fellow staff and clients
Meet with design management and IAI sales representative to evaluate the design and ensure that design requirements are met
Use appropriate methods to generate and verify the design
Works in conjunction with the other members of the team, such as the electrical designer and the mechanical assembler/developer during all stages of machine design/build
Completes all required machine build drawings (drafting) as required
Generates Bill of Materials (BOM) for both purchased parts and raw manufactured materials as required
Assists other IAI personnel during the equipment build, observes and monitors how the build is progressing

Physical Demands
This position may require frequent Sitting. Working in the Mechanical Design department also requires constant cervical flexion, the chin to chest movement. Maximum lifting weight can reach about 50lbs, maximum carrying weight is about 40lbs, and the maximum pushing and pulling weights can reach 100-150lbs. Constant forward reach with both arms is necessary as well as frequent grasping. Working in this position requires a very strong ability to work alone and self-supervise as well a strongly established ability to supervise others. It also requires the ability to handle attention to detail, tight deadlines, responsibility and accountability as well as the ability to multi-task.

Enrolled in Mechanical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering Technology
