The Opportunity

We are looking for a Wind & Solar Engineer to join our Power Production team. Reporting to the Wind Portfolio Manager, you will be responsible for managing the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of NSPI\xe2\x80\x99s Wind & Solar assets.

As a Wind & Solar Engineer:

  • This position will oversee the capital program for NS Power\xe2\x80\x99s wind farms. This will include working with our Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) partners to identify projects that improve safety, reliability, efficiency, and environmental compliance at our wind sites.
  • Develop and submit technical, financial, and regulatory justifications for capital projects, manage individual capital projects and work packages, and track and report on annual capital program progress.
  • Manage all aspects of the execution of capital projects at wind farms including hiring and oversight of contractors, budget tracking and forecasting, managing contractor safety program requirements, conducting site visits, identifying deficiencies, ensuring proper documentation and record keeping.
  • Remain current on new wind turbine technology; engage with OEMs to understand latest technical details about new products and updates or revisions to existing products.
  • Review root cause analysis (RCA) investigations performed by OEMs or others in order to assess RCA\xe2\x80\x99s completeness and provide evaluation of associated risks. Work may also include active participation in RCAs, including investigations into turbine and component failures, documentation of field conditions and engineering calculations (as appropriate).
  • Analyze wind turbine performance through data collection and observations and proactively address maintenance needs.
  • Review production information and maintenance records and develop business cases and project justifications for capital improvements to NS Power\xe2\x80\x99s wind facilities.
  • Responsible for work related to the maintenance of balance of plant assets including overhead electrical collector systems, substations, transformers, and roads.
  • Provide support during storms and equipment failures to address outages on the wind farms and solar site. Works closely with Energy Delivery Team during storms to respond to outages to minimize fuel costs and meet renewable targets.
  • You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of co-workers, by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations. You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives. You will have an insatiable desire to continuously improve safety performance and drive customer value.
  • Travel and provide support to NS Power\xe2\x80\x99s Wind Farms and Solar site as required.

  • The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in engineering and be a Full Member or Engineer in Training (or eligible for membership) in Engineers Nova Scotia.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience, or willingness to learn wind farm operations, and contract administration.
  • You will have knowledge of wind turbine components and operations (hardware, software, power controls, and generators).
  • The ideal candidate will also have experience with medium and high voltage electrical infrastructure, including overhead distribution equipment, underground cables, medium voltage transformers, substations, and switching and will have familiarity with work processes involving inventory management.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Willingness and ability to travel to Wind sites throughout the province.
