Conditions of Employment:


Must be legally entitled to work in Canada Possess and maintain a valid Full Stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence. Willing and able to fly in both small fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft for approximately 6 hours per day. Physically able and willing to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position, including working in remote locations with difficult terrain, removing big game heads with hand meat saws or electric reciprocating saws, gross dissection, bagging and loading of these heads into fridges, freezers and truck beds, driving all-terrain vehicles, etc.

Qualifications:


Essential:


Post secondary education in Natural Resources, Wildlife, biology, zoology, ecology, veterinary and animal sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Experience in wildlife identification and carcass handling. Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint). Strong written communication skills, including report preparation Strong verbal communication skills Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Strong interpersonal skills Experience supervising and/or coaching and training employees (RS2 only) Experience in hunting and field dressing wildlife, including big game. (RS2 only)
Desired:
Experience in research and analysis, including data collection and recording. Knowledge of biological sample collection, preparation, handling, and biological laboratory techniques and methods.

Duties:


Wildlife Health Lab Technician (RS1) - 6 weeks

The RS1 position functions as a wildlife health technician supporting provincial wildlife disease surveillance programs. Primary responsibilities include the collection, identification, handling, and preparation of high-quality biological samples, as well as data entry, labelling, and shipment. The incumbent is expected to contribute and maintain high standards of laboratory cleanliness, safety, and biosecurity. The incumbent may also be assigned additional laboratory or field duties as directed by the supervisor.



Wildlife Health Lead Lab Technician (RS2) - 14 weeks

The RS2 position carries broader responsibility for coordinating field and laboratory operations in support of wildlife disease management. In addition to the duties of an RS1, the incumbent is expected to independently manage projects, oversee data collection and analysis, and provide technical expertise in both laboratory and field work. This role also includes supervising, coaching, and training staff. The incumbent provides leadership in implementing health and safety standards, maintaining the laboratory cleanliness, maintaining data integrity, ensuring sufficient daily sample volumes for processing, and supporting regional wildlife managers in achieving program objectives. The incumbent may also be assigned additional laboratory or field duties as directed by the supervisor.
