EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Wildlife Biologist The Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Renewable Resources Board (GRRB) is a co-management Board located in Inuvik, Northwest Territories. The GRRB is currently seeking a motivated full-time Wildlife Biologist. This position is responsible for wildlife management, research, technical advice, relationship building and consultation in the Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Settlement Area (GSA). Main Responsibilities:

  • Develop work plans
  • Coordinate the development of wildlife management plans and research needs in collaboration with co-management partners
  • Develop and conduct wildlife research projects including funding applications and budget management
  • Conduct literature reviews of wildlife research and management in the GSA
  • Provide advice regarding wildlife topics
  • Provide technical reviews of various wildlife related reports
  • Develop wildlife related communication materials
  • Consult with Renewable Resources Councils (RRCs), government and co-management partners and public on wildlife management programs and research projects in the GSA
  • Provide plain language summaries of GRRB wildlife management and research projects to the RRCs
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships

Requirements (Applicants MUST demonstrate they meet the following):
  • Minimum of a Bachelor degree in Biology or related science field
  • Work experience in the wildlife field
  • Ability to conduct remote field work
  • Class 5 Driver\xe2\x80\x99s license, standard first aid and successful criminal records check by the first day of employment

Assets (Preference will be given to applicants that meet the following):
  • Knowledge of the GRRB mandate and the role of co-management in the North
  • Sound understanding of the Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement and Board policies
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation relating to wildlife in the NWT, such as the NWT Wildlife Act and associated regulations
  • Knowledge of management plans relating to wildlife in the Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Settlement Area (GSA)
  • Sound understanding of scientific methodology and integration with traditional knowledge
  • Experience in research design, methodology and management plan development
  • Experience in remote field work, comfortable flying in helicopters and/or small aircraft
  • Experience working in the north and with northern aboriginal communities, particularly in GSA communities
  • Strong communication, time management and organization skills
  • Computer literacy, data analysis (including GIS) and report writing
  • Experience with financial planning including preparation of funding proposals and managing budgets
  • Ability to perform technical reviews and provide advice
  • Supervisory experience of field staff and team management skills
  • Firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL), Advanced Wilderness First Aid or willingness to obtain these within the first 6 months of employment
  • Priority will be given to qualified Participants of the Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement and residents of the Northwest Territories

Starting Salary: $90,630 per year
