Together we are working with Nova Scotians to build a better future through sustainable natural resource management as we all benefit from the natural health and wealth of the province.
About Our Opportunity
As the Wildfire Training Officer, you will be responsible for all aspects of wildfire training administration including creating, coordinating and delivering new and/or existing wildfire training across the province. You will accomplish this in part by staying current with changes in the wildfire training community, chairing the provincial wildfire training committee, being an active member of the national and international training committees and annually assessing the training needs of the clients.
Additionally, as part of the wildfire management team, you will act as one of the provincial fire duty officers. This includes scheduled duty shifts throughout the fire season and involves setting aircraft alerts, dispatching detection and suppression aircraft, fire equipment, fire personnel and ensuring performance of daily fire control duties (including the calculation and dissemination of provincial fire danger ratings to the appropriate agencies).
This position will report to the Manager of Forest Protection.
Qualifications and Experience
As the successful candidate, you have completed a department recognized Technical Diploma Program in Forestry and have six (6) years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Previous wildfire, training (e.g. coordination/facilitation of training programs) and public speaking experience is required.
You must be highly motivated with strong self-initiative to continually monitor, improve and develop new training initiatives and stay at the forefront of new wildfire training opportunities.
In this role, you will maintain an extensive network and build positive working relationships with numerous government and non-government stakeholders (provincially, nationally and internationally). As such, exceptional interpersonal, communication (written and verbal) and consulting skills are required as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Excellent analytical, problem solving, decision making, organizational and time management skills are required. You have demonstrated computer skills (using Windows, Microsoft Suite and related wildfire programs) and the ability to operate department radios.
In addition, you have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and a valid driver's license (minimum Class 5).
