We are looking for candidates for our Janaury intake of the Wood\'s Homes Employment and Training Orientation Program (WHETOP). What is WHETOP? In this program, you will gain knowledge and understanding of our vision, our mission, and our values \xe2\x80\x93 the cornerstones of Wood\xe2\x80\x99s Homes that our Youth and Family Counsellors embody within their role.
Over the course of the month, you will receive firsthand experience within many of our different youth programs. You will have the opportunity to work alongside some of our most experienced Program Managers and Team Leaders through an instructive and hands-on approach. Additionally, you will complete all mandatory staff training and conditions of employment during this time.
Upon completion of the Wood\xe2\x80\x99s Home\xe2\x80\x99s Employment and Training Orientation program, you will qualify as a Youth and Family Counsellor I or II. Your specific skillset, attributes, and experience will be assessed, and you will be placed within one of our Wood\xe2\x80\x99s programs accordingly. Important FAQS before applying:

  • This session begins on January 30th, 2023.
  • Please note that many of our Wood\xe2\x80\x99s programs require candidates to have successfully completed WHETOP and do not hire Youth and Family Counsellors directly into the respective programs. This is applicable to all candidates and is not contingent on experience.
  • This is a paid position and successful candidates will be compensated for all hours attended and worked.
  • Applicants must have completed post-secondary education to be eligible for the Program.
  • We have full-time and part-time opportunities available for placements; however, candidates must be available Monday-Friday from January 30th - February 24th. Attendance is a mandatory requirement for each day of training.
  • WHETOP occurs monthly. If you are interested but unable to attend the current posted session (or unable to attend every day of training), please consider applying and letting us know what month you will be available.
Position Summary: Reporting to the Management of Wood\'s Homes and specific to each treatment program, the Youth & Family Counsellor Trainee - through supervision, on the job training, and formal education - develops the skills required to perform all the duties of a Youth & Family Counsellor I. The Youth & Family Counsellor Trainee works with children, youth and families on rotating shifts that provides coverage twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week. The Youth & Family Counsellor Trainee remains in this classification until the educational requirements are met to qualify as a Youth & Family Counsellor I or II. Responsibilities:
  • Develops skills in how to provide a predictable environment that allows for the development of an appropriate level of personal and social functioning for each client.
  • Develops skills and presents a proper role model for each client to utilize in his/her/their personality growth.
  • Learns how to recognize and provide a therapeutic milieu.
  • Learns how to participate in supervision and team meetings.
  • Learns how to accurately document daily, weekly, and monthly events and maintains appropriate administrative and client records.
  • Attends and participates in all required meetings and approved conferences.
  • Attends designated in-service seminars and workshops.
  • Receives instruction or direction and asks for guidance and information from team members.
  • Completes all required health and safety training
  • Reports workplace hazards, unsafe or unhealthy conditions, or incidents (including near misses, injuries, or equipment damage) to their direct supervisor.
  • Demonstrates due diligence in being exceptional in the delivery of high-quality services and in meeting the requirements of the Health and Safety Management System at Wood\xe2\x80\x99s Homes.
Qualifications:
  • Diploma or degree in the Social Sciences, Child and Youth Care, Social Work, or Nursing and/or have related experience.
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Current proof of professional registration may be required for certain diplomas or degrees.
  • Must have class 5 driver\xe2\x80\x99s license (full or GDL) and own transportation.

Schedule - Weeks 1-3: Monday-Friday from 8:30am-5:00pm. Week 4: Variable schedule (Shadow Shifts). Requires afternoon and evening availability (ex. 1pm-9pm). Based on the information provided, can you commit to attending all sessions of WHETOP?
  • After completing WHETOP, part-time employees are required to have most evenings/weekends open for availability/scheduling and full-time employees are required to have open availability to accommodate shift-work. Shift-work involves a rotational schedule: 4 days on/4 days off, 11.5 hours/shift and includes evenings, weekends, awake overnights, and holidays.
