Welder/quality Inspector

Job Description

The Welder/Quality Inspector will inspect welded and other components provided by outside vendors, ensuring all components meet the high standards required for Tornado trucks. They will assist in the identification, documentation and proper disposition of NCR and DMR parts. They also work across the Company where needed, providing welding for a variety of projects including material rework, building maintenance and prototype construction. Their work is performed to a high level of quality and precision. They must be able to perform work in a safe and efficient manner while keeping high and consistent quality.

Reports to: Supervisor - Inspection, Lead-Welding

Supervises: None

Internal Contacts: Maintenance Supervisor, Production Supervisors and Leads, Management, Production and Maintenance Workers

Key Responsibility Areas:



Visual Inspections

Performs visual inspections of all incoming fabricated parts while working closely with the material department.

Ensures welds are safe and ready to function as part of a device or structure.

Reviews parts for quality, workmanship, proper assembly and functionality.

Monitors vendor/supplier's quality issues, recommends when a nonconformance report should be completed, and when necessary, devise and implement corrective actions.

Reviews parts identified in the production process as NCR or DMR, assists in root cause analysis, properly documents the outcome and final disposition.

Administrative Functions

Makes sure deficiencies are fixed, retested and signed off before parts re-enter production.

Helps to document vendor and supplier deficiencies, attitudes, and overall ability to supply fabricated and manufactured parts that meet or exceed TGHL and CWB standards.

Welding

Reads and interprets blueprints, specifications and instructions.

Review assignments and plan the requirements to complete.

Determines materials and supplies needed to complete the project.

Prepares and sets up necessary tools and equipment for welding job.

Operates welding and other related equipment to builds required parts.

Able to weld in a variety of modes including GMAW, FCAW, GTAW and SMAW in all positions.

Retrieves materials required and ensures they meet specifications.

Maintenance

Cleans and services equipment.

Replaces damaged or worn components.

Testing:

Tests component parts (air, hydro).

Test welds and performs Dye Pen testing.

Projects / Other Assignments:

Works on other projects or initiatives as assigned.

Qualifications:



Education

Technical School

Experience

Welding Experience required

Quality inspection experience is preferred

Manufacturing of tanks and parts experience preferred

Certifications

CWB welding certificates would be an asset.

Second- or third-year Apprentice status towards a Welding Certificate. Note that further apprenticeship may not be supported for employees in this position.

Working Conditions



Tornado operates in an industrial shop. It is a very dusty environment and can be warm in the summer and cold in the winter due to the bay doors opening for part movement. The work requires an ability to lift heavy objects, and to work in a variety of positions (standing, kneeling, crouching and underneath vehicles) for long periods of time.

On the Fabrication floor there are overhead cranes, forklifts, welding and many other hazards. This job always requires certain PPE to be worn. The employee will provide appropriate safety footwear and a welding helmet. Tornado will supply safety glasses and hearing protection, and all other required PPE.
