Weed & Pest Inspectors (Summer Student Positions)

The County of Vermilion River is seeking three to four (3-4) highly motivated individuals to join our safety-oriented team as Weed & Pest Inspectors. Join our Agriculture team for the summer and be part of a fun and energetic team focused on improving agriculture sustainability! The Weed & Pest Inspectors will assist in managing an integrated pest management program through inspections, education, and control. This position is based out of Kitscoty, Alberta.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Assist in integrated vegetation management by identifying invasive weeds, conducting field inspections, and creating detailed reports and records including GIS data
- Manage noxious weeds through identification, education, and control
- Communicate and assist landowners with weed identification and their weed control responsibilities
- Assist in annual crop pest surveillance, including clubroot inspections, Bertha armyworm counts and grasshopper surveys
- Assist with the Agriculture Plastic recycling programs
- Support for Agriculture Sustainability programs when needed, including ALUS, wetlands, and environmental conservation programs
This position will tentatively start on May 6, 2024, and conclude on August 30, 2024. A competitive wage is available ($20 - 24 per hour) depending on experience. Training in weed ID, herbicide stewardship and Authorized Assistant training may be provided. The successful candidates will be required to provide a criminal record check and drivers abstract.
