in the

Cumming School of Medicine

invites applications for a

Web Developer

. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.


This position reports to the HBI Logistics Coordinator.


The Web Developer will design, develop, implement, test, deploy and document a new searchable Membership and Alumni directory platform for the Hotchkiss Brain Institute.


This role is time-bound to deliver the launch of the platform in 6 months, and requires collaboration with HBI leadership, operations, and administrative staff. The platform is "product-inception-to-launch", including a plan and documentation for long-term maintenance, and requires both requirements translation and active build / prototype / iteration cycles.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

(job functions include but are not limited to):

Translate detailed HBI requirements into a technical solution architecture Design, implement and deploy the Membership directory and Alumni directory platforms Implement search/filter functionality across key fields, including research areas, location, career details Implement profile claim / update request workflow Implement semi-automated recurring data aggregation capabilities (quarterly scraping / import) with moderation Implement administrative backend for data management, including CSV/JSON export Ensure WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility and responsive front-end design across major browsers Integrate privacy, opt-out, and consent compliance (CASL + UCalgary standards) Develop and maintain documentation: workflows, system architecture, admin procedures Support testing, QA, debugging, and user acceptance prior to launch Participate in internal progress reviews, demos, iteration cycles

Qualifications / Requirements:



Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (minimum), Master's degree preferred 3-5 years relevant professional experience developing and deploying modern databases and web-based applications Experience with data models and related tools (e.g., PowerBI, python, excel, etc.) Experience integrating external data sources (e.g., LinkedIn / public web data) via API or data scraping approaches Awareness of data privacy and consent compliance (CASL / PIPEDA) in a Canadian university context Experience building simple administrative dashboards and data export functionality (CSV / JSON) Demonstrated ability to write clear, maintainable code, and produce development + admin documentation Experience working within the University environment, particularly with IT, web, and privacy & compliance teams an asset Familiarity with university requirements regarding website content approvals an asset Experience building profile claim / moderation workflows an asset
