Summary:
Barr is seeking a water and wastewater engineer to join its Calgary office. This person will undertake challenging and progressive work focused on water and wastewater treatment facilities for industrial and municipal clients. Project responsibilities may include working as an individual or as part of a project team to assist with mass balance calculations; bench testing of physical, chemical, or biological treatment unit operations; operation of pilot treatment systems; conceptual and detailed engineering including plans and specifications for construction of treatment systems; installation and startup of new systems; evaluation and troubleshooting of existing systems; and preparation of technical reports. Fieldwork opportunities may require some out-of-town travel.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor?s degree in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering
Academic coursework directly related to the job responsibilities described above
Minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certified or ability to obtain certification within one year
Strong technical skills in a wide range of analysis and design related to water and wastewater engineering
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members, regulators, and clients
Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs (up to 20% travel and 20% fieldwork expected; project needs will vary seasonally and over time)
Legal authorization to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship
Acceptable driving record
Preferred Qualifications:
Master?s degree in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering
Experience in a laboratory setting including bench scale testing
Experience with engineering plans and specifications, equipment selection, and cost estimating
Sound understanding of water chemistry and environmental microbiology
Ability to apply knowledge and experience to creatively solve complex problems with loosely-defined inputs
A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Calgary, Alberta, office.
NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.
