The Opportunity


The Infrastructure Department is comprised of five Branches, including three Design and Construction Branches, the Wastewater Operations Branch, and the Water Operations Branch. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City\xe2\x80\x99s environmental infrastructure and systems including water supply, treatment, and distribution; wastewater collection and treatment; and the design and construction of the City\'s infrastructure including treatment plants, pump stations, roads, sewers, watermains, sidewalks, stormwater management ponds, water towers and reservoirs, etc.

Under the direction of an Operator-in-Charge (OIC), the Water Works Operator position assists with the installation, maintenance, inspection and repair of equipment in the drinking water treatment, drinking water distribution, and customer service sections. In addition, this position assists with receiving the delivery of operational and maintenance supplies. This position identifies problems and performs basic process adjustments to the drinking water treatment and drinking water distribution systems. Finally, this position is responsible for obtaining samples, conducting tests, assisting with assessment and response to reports of non-compliant water quality and performing the inspection, repair and cleaning of satellite drinking water facilities.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
  • Two (2) year College Diploma, Environmental Technician, Civil Engineering Technician, or Mechanical Engineering Technician
  • Two (2) valid Drinking Water System Operator-in-Training (OIT) Certificates from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC)
  • Valid Ontario Class \xe2\x80\x9cG\xe2\x80\x9d Driver\xe2\x80\x99s Licence in good standing


Experience
  • Six (6) months of experience performing duties related to the above mentioned major responsibilities within a drinking water system environment

Knowledge/Skill/Ability
  • Medical documentation to confirm medically fit to wear a respirator
  • General knowledge of water treatment, water distribution and supply, and water distribution processes
  • Computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and the Internet

  • Please note that this is a requirement of the position for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Procedure. Existing employees will be grandparented from this requirement.




Other Important Information

Location: Barrie Surface Water Treatment Plant, 20 Royal Parkside Dr, Barrie, Ontario

Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

Wage: This position is within the CUPE Local 2380 Bargaining Unit with the following pay level and 2023 pay range:
    • Pay Level: Level 4
    • Yearly Salary: $59,155.20 to $70,844.80 per year
    • Hourly Pay Rate: $28.44 to $34.06 per hour


Benefits: This position includes single health and dental benefits, prorated paid sick time based on the expected duration of employment, and prorated vacation time based on calendar year and in accordance with the Employment Standards Act.
