POSITION SUMMARY
The Town of Gibsons is seeking an experienced operator to lead their Wastewater Treatment Plant as Chief Operator.

This is an exciting and dynamic role that provides an attractive opportunity to work in a unique and distinctive municipality well known for its leadership in natural asset management.

Reporting to the Manager of Maintenance and Operations, the Chief Operator is responsible for the efficient and safe operation of the Town\xe2\x80\x99s Level lll wastewater treatment plant and lift station and the supervision of the treatment plant staff. This key position is integral to the effective collection and treatment of municipal wastewater in accordance with regulatory requirements. The Chief Operator also provides operational support for water treatment and distribution.

This position requires an individual with strong leadership and technical skills as well as certification under the BC Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP) in Wastewater Treatment Level lll and Wastewater Collection Level ll. Familiarity and experience with potable water distribution is considered an asset.

In this supervisory position, the incumbent will be overseeing all employees who work out of the Wastewater Treatment Plant which includes oversight of employee occupational health and safety as well as the training needs of plant employees. The Chief Operator will lead others to incorporate industry best practice into the day-to-day operation of the plant.

As the successful candidate, you have a demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism and tact under stressful and emergency conditions. You have strong interpersonal and communication skills and use a collaborative, team-work approach to achieve improvements and objectives.

Flexibility to work standby and to respond to callouts outside of regular working hours during evenings and weekends, is required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Completion of Grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Drivers License.
  • Valid BC EOCP certificate in Wastewater Treatment Level III and Wastewater Collection Level II. EOCP certificates must be maintained and remain in good standing with EOCP. Training for other EOCP certification levels in Wastewater Collection is encouraged and supported by the municipality.
  • EOCP Water Distribution Level l Certification. Additional relevant technical training in water distribution, considered an asset. Training for other EOCP certification levels in Water Distribution is encouraged and supported by the municipality.
  • Wastewater treatment plant laboratory training and experience.
  • Confined space entry certification.
  • Basic mechanical, electrical and instrumentation training and experience.

SUMMARY OF KEY COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE
  • Working knowledge of health and environmental regulations pertaining to water supply, wastewater treatment systems, and occupational health and safety regulations and practices.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, coaching/influencing, critical thinking, and presentation skills.
  • Leadership training with a focus on supervisory or management skill building.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare reports of a technical nature and to initiate, develop and maintain a wide variety of reports, records and statistical data using Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with all levels of the organization, external agencies, contractors, and the public including special interest groups and volunteers.
  • Strong computer skills and good knowledge of Microsoft Office software particularly Word and Excel, familiarity with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
  • Must be available to respond to system alarms and emergencies during and outside of regular office hours.
  • Commitment to continuous learning by maintaining professional and technical knowledge through attendance of professional workshops, reviewing professional publications, and establishing personal networks.
  • Valid motor vehicle air endorsement certification and valid first aid certification, considered an asset.
