If you answered yes, our Whiteshell Laboratories (WL) site located near Pinawa, Manitoba is looking for a Waste Characterization Specialist (WCS). WL is required to certify the composition of all its waste and how it will dispositioned through re-use, recycling, storage or disposal. Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) employees perform all duties in accordance with established health and safety and regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (i.e. utilizing personal protective equipment as per safe work procedures). Notifying management or supervisor of all occurrences, injuries, illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm themselves, their co-workers or any other on the premises in a timely manner and in accordance with established reporting requirements.

What will you be doing?

\xc2\xb7 Developing new waste characterization initiatives, providing oversight to established techniques/operations and continually seeking alternatives to improve the way Waste Services plans and executes waste characterization while meeting customer criteria and company/regulatory requirements.

\xc2\xb7 Staying informed of the latest technological and scientific developments in the field and making recommendations related to the improvement of Waste Characterization Processes to ensure CNL offers an effective and efficient service.

\xc2\xb7 Working effectively with decommissioning teams and various other organizations, including Environmental Protection, Radiation Protection, Health Physics, General Services, Procurement and Facility Operations.

\xc2\xb7 Assisting projects with scheduling and coordinating resources.

\xc2\xb7 Providing technical guidance to the team of Technical and Professional staff on characterization methods and processes, efficiencies, new methodologies, fingerprint application, and general knowledge development.

\xc2\xb7 Investigating unexpected results and interpreting the complex data using past experience and comparative situations.

\xc2\xb7 Making recommendations and providing guidance that are technically accurate and feasible.

\xc2\xb7 Authoring, revising and reviewing characterization/operational documents, (e.g., Data Quality Objectives, Waste Characterization Plans, Characterization Work Plans, Operating Procedures, Project Documentation and Training Plans).

\xc2\xb7 Reviewing the work of others for technical accuracy and adequacy.

\xc2\xb7 Supporting field walk downs of assigned job scopes and coordinating and monitoring field activities related to Sample Plan development and the management of samples through chain of custody.

\xc2\xb7 Analyzing data and using specialized software while presenting concise and accurate information to waste generators about the characteristics and management options of their waste.

\xc2\xb7 Interfacing with a wide range of support service groups including, but not limited to; Industrial Hygiene, Radiation Protection, Trades staff, Waste Management Operations staff, and Waste Program Staff.

\xc2\xb7 Innovating while adhering to safety, regulatory and client requirements and demands.

\xc2\xb7 Assessing new project scope and defining the strategic approach to characterizing the waste stream to the appropriate level.

\xc2\xb7 Developing sound Waste Characterization and Sampling plans, understanding the limitations of those plans and providing oversight and guidance during execution to ensure quality samples are collected forming the basis of sound analysis.

\xc2\xb7 Interpreting data from testing and analysis (i.e. gamma spectroscopy), and various laboratory capabilities for analysis of various radionuclides and non-radioactive elements in a multitude of samples (liquid, soil, concrete, etc.) and using this information for making decisions and recommendations for to waste processing.

\xc2\xb7 Working under pressure and managing conflicting priorities.

\xc2\xb7 Communicating well orally and in writing. Writing excellent technical reports, with an ability to organize and present ideas, requirements and processes in a logical and succinct manner.

\xc2\xb7 Delivering presentations and/or training to other staff, including technologists, professionals and managers.

\xc2\xb7 Maintaining confidentiality in all matters.

\xc2\xb7 Other duties as assigned by manager.

What we are looking for:

\xc2\xb7 Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat \xe2\x80\x9cStandard on Security Screening\xe2\x80\x9d and the \xe2\x80\x9cPolicy on Government Security\xe2\x80\x9d.

\xc2\xb7 Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Health Physics, Mathematics, Nuclear Engineering or Physical Sciences.

\xc2\xb7 Experience in nuclear operations specifically in the areas of Waste Characterization, Environmental remediation, Waste Acceptance Criteria, Transportation of Dangerous Goods and related regulations is considered an asset.

\xc2\xb7 A strong knowledge of waste characterization techniques and industry best practices including US EPA Data Quality Objectives (DQO) Process and MARSSIM principles is required as well as knowledge and understanding of the Canadian Standards Association N292 \xe2\x80\x98General Principles for the Management of Radioactive Waste\xe2\x80\x99, Canadian Nuclear Safety Act Regulations, IAEA Standards, as well as related provincial regulations including but not limited to PCB regulations, Federal Halocarbon Regulations, Canadian Environmental Protections Act, etc.

\xc2\xb7 Must demonstrate an understanding of radiation detection techniques, the development and application of radionuclide scaling factors, and be able to explain various waste processing methods related to nuclear waste.

\xc2\xb7 Must understand principles of statistical analysis and how they apply to this process. Must be able to read and understand Waste Acceptance Criteria documents

\xc2\xb7 Strong technical and communications skills to provide guidance on technical problems. This position would be expected to provide expert advice within the company.

\xc2\xb7 Strong technical writing skills to produce complex reports on technical subjects.

\xc2\xb7 Strong communication skills to influence and educate various audiences including operations staff of various backgrounds, clients, supply chain vendors, peers/colleagues and management.

\xc2\xb7 Knowledge of Waste Management principles and practices including an understanding of waste hierarchy and how to apply it.

\xc2\xb7 Knowledge of Radiation Protection Principles, contamination control and how to apply these to work activities is required. Characterization Specialists are expected to achieve a minimum Group 3 certification while in role.

\xc2\xb7 An understanding of various radiation measurement instrumentation including various gamma spectroscopy instruments (in field and in shop), X-Ray Fluorescence, etc. and various analytical techniques (e.g. Toxic Characteristic Leaching Procedure) and when to use them.

\xc2\xb7 Understanding the limits of instruments, how to read and interpret data output from these instruments and being able to factor in uncertainty in the analysis is essential.

\xc2\xb7 Enter decommissioning work areas to perform field walk-downs to assess processes and/or to help resolve issues directly at the source.

\xc2\xb7 Wear appropriate PPE & C (hard hat, safety shoes, hearing protection) depending on the field conditions.

\xc2\xb7 The WCS will be designated a Nuclear Energy Worker and will be expected to spend approximately 50% of their time in the field, working with Waste Generators and other personnel involved in waste management activities. The other 50% of the time will be spent in an office setting; the individual must be willing to work in a shared office space.
