Overview


The Vice President, Merchandising Services will be responsible for leading the national merchandising services team across the organization. The ideal individual will be both results and action oriented, with the ability to build analytical, high performance teams. Possessing a track record of connecting analytics with merchandising operations, the chosen individual will be responsible for driving process efficiency, gross margin opportunities and cost savings while creating positive momentum to fuel Sobeys’ growth strategy. Strong service orientation, collaboration skills and proven ability to deliver programs across a complex organization will be critical to success.
Leveraging consumer insights, competitive data, advanced merchandising analytics and new IT tools, the Vice President, Merchandising Services will collaborate with partners in category management, store operations, marketing and private label, to respond to emerging consumer and market trends.

Utilizing a forward-thinking strategic mindset, the Vice President, Merchandising Services will act as a key stakeholder in pricing strategy and execution, space planning and execution and establishing new foundations for master data to support the future of retail. This includes assessing strategy effectiveness, competitor and market trends, as well as supporting category management and national vendor sourcing decisions.
The ideal candidate will evaluate and elevate the company’s core competency around master data integrity. They will serve as the hub for master data integrity and be tasked with collaborating across the rest of the Sobeys organization to infuse a strategic, measured and analytical backbone that delivers maximum efficiency to both stores and merchants.
Talent development and commitment to the progression of its employees is a critical component at Sobeys. The Vice President, Merchandising Services will be accountable for attracting, developing and motivating top talent within the merchandising organization.


  • Lead the national merchandising services team to support the execution of the national merchandising strategy and meet performance goals.
  • Oversee all merchandising processes and services. Manage planograms, space management, data integrity and overall process decisions.
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders to develop national pricing and promotion strategy by setting and ensuring execution of national pricing-promo strategy. Assess strategy effectiveness, competitors and market trend.
  • Provide governance for pricing, promotions and data integrity to ensure that they are in alignment with the ultimate goal of delivering a great customer experience in support of Sobeys’ strategies and financial goals.
  • Support pricing, costing and promotions strategy and execution in collaboration with Category Management, Private Label, Operations, Procurement, and Marketing.
  • Influence and support ongoing company transformation initiatives (projects) from a merchandising services standpoint
  • Lead critical initiatives related to pricing, promotions, space productivity and product master data.
  • In collaboration with EPMO, HR and/or IT partners, develop and execute a roadmap to further standardize all merchandising services processes and/or functions into the national organization
  • Instill a culture of performance and process & data-driven decision-making across the team.

Job Requirements


  • Must have a minimum of 10 years of merchandising services experience, ideally rooted in a financial upbringing. Brings considerable depth across the broader function, with knowledge spikes in merchandising process, category management, merchandise financials, , pricing strategy, promotions, and costing analytics.
  • A strong background in program delivery, processes and systems will be a critical asset.
  • Has a track record of successfully implementing systems and process transformation initiatives across the merchandising organization.
  • A stellar communicator and relationship builder who effectively drives alignment while leading cross-functional teams.
  • A people leader who can inspire, motivate and develop a world-class merchandising team across the organization.
  • Leads, manages and develops a team and leverages key strengths and capabilities.
  • Brings a thorough, yet modern approach to retail, ideally a proven and well-respected entity in the grocery retail environment.
