Job Synopsis


The MCCS Thrift Shops provide quality used clothing, furniture, and appliances at reasonable prices to a growing market. They generate a significant amount of funds for MCC's relief and development projects. The Shop Assistant & Volunteer Coordinator will work together with the Thrift Shop staff, volunteers, and Board in the overall operation of the Thrift Shop



Assignment Description:





Thrift Shops seek to be a friendly,caring presence in their community, showing value and respectto all. Practicing and promoting faithful stewardship and care for God's creation and raising funds for MCC are also key components to the mission statement of the Thrift Shops. The Community Gift & Thrift shop in Lanigan is one of Saskatchewan's seven MCC Thrift Shops. It is owned and operated by MCC Saskatchewan, supported by a local Shop Board made up of people from the surrounding communities.



The Shop Assistant & Volunteer Coordinator is accountable to the Thrift Shop Manager who will provide direction for the tasks, duties, and responsibilities of the role. This is a salaried part-time position (0.5 FTE, 20 hours/week) with the final work schedule being determined by the Shop Manager.

Self-motivated, able to work independently, and willing to take initiative, while at the same time responding to the direction of the Shop Manager. Willing to work as a team member with management and volunteers. Strong interpersonal skills with people of all ages and backgrounds; friendly and outgoing. Demonstrated cashier and retail sales skills. Experience working with volunteers and/or volunteer management Ability to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently. Requires about 5 or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday. Ability to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level shelves and able to reach upper shelves with use of a stool or a ladder when necessary. Written and verbal communication skills within today's technologies. Solid organizational expertise. Ability to reflect the Anabaptist value of service. Ability to manage conflict creatively and redemptively. A heart for justice from a Biblical perspective, global understanding, and awareness of environmental concerns. Satisfactory Canadian criminal record check.

Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ's unconditional love through daily interactions with volunteers, donors and customers.



Volunteer Coordination

Enter and maintain all volunteer records and information accurately in the Volgistics database. Communicate between volunteers and staff to keep team connected and consistent. Develop a Volunteer Management plan for the shop, working with Shop staff and MCCS staff. The Volunteer management cycle includes: recruiting, on boarding, training (orientation), supervising, performance management, and appreciating and recognizing volunteers, Manage and implement the Volunteer management plan in consultation with the shop staff and MCCS staff. Including + Reaching out to schools, churches, and organizations to promote volunteerism in the Shop.
+ Facilitating and hosting group volunteer requests.
+ Training and orientation processes
+ Performing annual check-ins with volunteers and/or assist Management Team with annual check-ins.
+ Developing and implementing formal and informal volunteer recognition and appreciation initiatives.
Meet and participate regularly in Volunteer Coordination meetings, sharing learnings and resources with other Volunteer Coordinators.



Shop Assistant & Support

Follow the MCCS Thrift Shop Mission Statement, and the wishes and directives of the Shop Board, under the guidance of the Manager. Communicate the MCC mission and values and the mission of the Thrift Shop in a positive manner to donors, volunteers, and customers. Assist in the daily operation of the shop including sorting, tagging, pricing and processing donations; stocking retail shelves and displays; answering the phone; customer service; help to keep the Shop neat, clean and attractive; assisting and supporting volunteers; operating the cash register; counting, recording and depositing daily cash. In the absence of the Manager or Assistant Manager, open and close the Thrift Shop, completing cash out and correctly management all Shop records. Oversee the shop appropriately, according to set standards and procedures. Exercise a compassionate spirit with volunteers, donors and customers on issues which arise as people interact within the store. Model reconciliation and healing in daily actions with public, donors and volunteers. Assist with merchandise placement, displays, etc. under the Manager's guidance. Model non-violent peacemaking in the workplace, community, and church. Carry out other duties which arise in the work environment, under the Manager's direction.




Note: Physical labour is involved in this position, sometimes requiring the ability to lift to 50 pounds.

The Community MCC Gift & Thrift Shop is in the town of Lanigan, located just on Highway 16 about 120 km east of Saskatoon. Lanigan has a population of around 1400 people. Surrounding communities include Drake, Guernsey, Jansen and Watrous.
