DUTIES

The Studio Technician's primary duty is to provide support related to equipping, set-up, maintenance, safety and delivery of studio/field sessions (including field trips and field courses) at Thompson Rivers University.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES * Maintains the inventory of supplies and course-related equipment as needed for the studio facility.

  • Maintains studio facilities by cleaning, and monitoring equipment use and maintenance.
  • Operates standard studio equipment and some specialized equipment/tools.
  • Performs various clerical duties including reception duties, faxing, photocopying, report processing/filing, distributing results, booking appointments, recording attendance and data entry.
  • Prepares and sets up supplies and equipment for teaching demonstrations.
  • Compiles statistical reports for month/year end reporting.
  • Schedules use of Studio facility for teaching/learning.
  • Organizing studio and art gallery set up and take down in consultation with teaching Faculty.
  • Works with Faculty to identify optimal use of Studio equipment and technology for Studio/Field activities.
  • Trains others in the use of Studio equipment and technology.
  • Maintains a safe environment in the studio facilities.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance/Quality Control programs as required by accreditation/approval standards and University protocols/policy.
  • Works with Faculty to oversee work study students.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
  • Four (4) year undergraduate post secondary degree in visual arts; (BFA) or equivalent
EXPERIENCE
  • Three (3) years' technical/studio experience in related discipline
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safe studio and field practices. Working knowledge of WHMIS and WorkSafe regulations
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials and techniques used in visual arts studios in the appropriate discipline. This includes knowledge of digital media, photography, printmaking and wood/metal shop skills
  • Knowledge of studio equipment appropriate to the discipline of visual arts
  • Demonstrated data entry skills
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Sitting or standing at desk for long periods of time
  • Dust, fumes, volatile chemicals, electromagnetic fields, power tools, low energy radiation from equipment on a frequent basis
  • Ability to lift weights in excess of 10kg
  • Some travel within BC may be required
The salary for the above position is determined by the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879, as it presently exists.

Pay Band

CUPE Grade 09 $31.19

Salary rate

Please Note: This position may be subject to a 90% salary for the first 560 hours of employment.
