Virtual Geology Project Officer

Duties:

  • Application of geologic knowledge and training when creating virtual geology fieldtrips.
  • Design, collect data, and construct virtual geology field trips for the 2023 summer field season with oversight from the project co-leads (M. Samolczyk and J. Cubley). This includes time for preliminary planning and training, as well as project finalization.
  • Collect 3D rock imagery and high quality still images for use in virtual geology field trips using a camera and computer software.
  • Collect and edit drone data.
  • Construct virtual geology fieldtrips on a digital platform (e.g. ESRI StoryMaps). This will include drafting diagrams and written geologic descriptions.
  • Conduct geology field work associated with virtual geology field trips. This will include being outdoors in all weather conditions, rigorous hiking, camping and cooking in remote areas, and carrying heaving loads. Estimated time in field is 3 - 4 weeks.
  • Create teaching materials for middle-school and high-school level students. This may include liaising and consultation with educators.
  • Carry out virtual geology project promotion, including the design and creation of promotional materials.
  • Engage stakeholders and interest groups, including any affected First Nations.
Qualifications:
  • The candidate must have completed a geology degree. Completion of graduate-level geology education with previous geology field experience is an asset.
  • Certification from Transport Canada to operate and fly a drone is an asset.
  • Comfortable working with various software platforms, such as ESRI StoryMaps and ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Cloud programs, etc.
  • Physical fitness allowing for strenuous hiking and carrying equipment in the backcountry.
  • Comfort camping and with helicopter travel.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
