L'Acadie Vineyards is Nova Scotia's first certified organic vineyard and winery, and the first winery and farm in North America to obtain Biocyclic Vegan International certification. The site is located in Gaspereau Valley, in the heart of Nova Scotia wine country (M'kma'ki). L'Acadie Vine- yards is a family-run business with all operations from grape growing to winemaking to retail and tourism conducted on their estate property. L'Acadie Vineyards has been certified organic since inception 20 years ago and continues to contribute significantly to reducing carbon for a clean Nova Scotia.

Summary of Position



Duties will mainly be the general care and maintenance of the vineyard and surrounding grounds, with the incorporation of data collection projects and social media outreach. Vineyard activities may include tying canes, tucking shoots, scouting for pests, leaf removal, irrigation, planting new vines and bird net installation. There will also be opportunities to work within the winery, helping with the production of organic wine. The successful candidate needs to have the ability to work outdoors in variable weather, be able to lift up to 20kg, and work both individually and in a team environment.

Duties and Responsibilities



Including but not limited to:

Assist in planting new vines Assist in applying plant-based compost to young vines, monitoring growth and providing care Tucking new vine shoots into trellis at multiple growth stages Assisting spot irrigation for young vines Shoot thinning to control excessive vine growth Leaf removal around fruiting zone Monitoring, recording and analyzing vineyard pest populations and precipitation data Installing bird netting - wildlife monitoring and control Working with a small team to complete vineyard tasks- motivating, monitoring progression, and problem solving in field as needed Reporting to the Vineyard Manager daily and communicating vineyard conditions Researching organic practices, new pests, weed management, nutrient sources Assist in grounds maintenance - using power mowers and trimmers Assist with bottling and labelling of wine Assist with disgorging of sparkling wineOutreach Projects: Possibly give public tours and answer questions of on-site guests and customers Give short presentation on vineyard practices to an educational group Create a series of posts through L'Acadie Vineyard's social media outlets on internship progression and/or current projects

Requirements/Qualifications



Must be a Canadian citizen, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada; From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship; Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years at time of internship; Must not be an immediate family member of community partner; Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment; Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback; Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset; Must be motivated and able to work independently Must have the ability to work outdoors in variable weather and temperatures Be able to lift 20kg and perform repetitive tasks Being over age of 19 years is an asset to be able to perform occasional wineshop duties Must have own transportation (no public transit to work site)

Wage

$17.20/hr

Working Conditions

The majority of the work will be outside, and conditions may change during the day. It is recommended to have good outdoor attire, such as a rain coat, sun and bug repellant, and work shoes/boots (must be closed-toe, waterproof is highly recommended). Occasional work within the winery requires closed-toed shoes, ideally waterproof when working in the cellar.
