General Description of Class



Under general direction leads a group of Laboratory Animal Technicians/Veterinary Technologists in a unit or area; or following a specified training period is a surgical specialist working within the surgical unit.



Typical Duties



The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required and the extent of responsibility involved in this job. They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated. Flexibility of the employee to perform a wide variety of functions is necessary in successfully fulfilling the requirements of this position. The degree to which each employee performs each of the following tasks listed below will vary according to where and when the employee is scheduled to work.



(a) leads, directs and trains a group of Veterinary Technologists and Laboratory Animal Technicians;

(b) maintains daily animal inventories and submits forms for monthly billing purposes;

(c) responsible for implementing dog and cat conditioning programs according to divisional standard operating procedures;

(d) maintains sentinel program in all rodent rooms;

(e) ensures the maintenance of medical history records, breeding records, treatment schedules, prepares computer generated weekend feeding and treatment schedules;

(f) ensures the appropriate disinfection and maintenance of all animal holding rooms is performed;

(g) responsible for all quarantine procedures for incoming mice;

(h) responsible for surgical suites located in the department including maintaining inventories, regular maintenance of equipment, providing technical assistance, anaesthetic induction of animals, surgical monitoring, preparation and sterilization of surgical packs, set up and cleaning of operating rooms;

(i) performs duties in the Level 3 containment area and/or with radioisotopes;

(j) may perform the duties of an Veterinary Technologist 2 and;

(k) other related duties as required.



Minimum Requirements for Selection



Education:

Completion of a recognized Veterinary Technology Diploma and is a Registered Laboratory Animal Technician with the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science.



Experience:

Four years of related experience with a minimum of three years as a Veterinary Technologist.



Other:

Physically capable of performing the required duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs. No history of animal-related allergies. Must be willing to participate in the University Health and Safety program, which includes the requirement to undergo an immunization program depending on the work environment. Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written). Ability to take direction and work independently. May be required to be in possession of a valid Provincial Class "G" driver's license. Ability to work weekends and holidays as required. Basic computer skills.
