The Regional Animal Protection Society (RAPS) is a registered charity and one of Canada's largest no-kill animal-serving organizations. We operate the RAPS Animal Hospital, the RAPS Cat Sanctuary, the RAPS Adoption & Education Centre, and several thrift stores. We are seeking a dedicated Veterinary Technician to join our team and support our commitment to exceptional, humane, and ethical veterinary care.
Position Overview
The Veterinary Technician supports veterinarians, delivers high-quality medical care, and ensures the well-being of animals including dogs, cats, small mammals, reptiles, and birds. This role requires technical expertise, compassion, attention to detail, and strong communication to provide outstanding client and patient experience.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Patient Care
Conduct patient assessments, examinations, and diagnostic procedures
Take vital signs, collect samples, administer medications and vaccines
Provide wound care and assist with safe animal restraint
Prepare for and assist during surgical procedures, including anesthesia monitoring, intubation, and surgical site prep
Provide post-operative care and operate diagnostic equipment such as x-ray, ultrasound and laboratory tools
Sedation monitoring, including IV catheter placement
Client Service & Communication
Deliver excellent customer service in person, by phone, and electronically
Educate clients on medication administration, home care, and general pet health
Maintain positive and respectful interactions with staff, volunteers, and RAPS members
Hospital Operations
Maintain sanitary, sterile conditions in treatment and surgical areas
Document patient conditions, treatments, and updates with accuracy
Maintain and troubleshoot medical equipment; coordinate repairs as needed
Assist with inventory control and stocking supplies
Contribute to a team-oriented, collaborative, no-kill workplace culture
Core Skills & Competencies
Surgical assistance and preparation
Diagnostic and radiology equipment operation
Accurate medication administration
Safe and effective animal restraint
Laboratory sample collection including but not limited to venipuncture, and cystocentesis
Equipment maintenance
Strong documentation and record-keeping abilities
Excellent communication, professionalism, and patience - proficiency in English
Ability to train new team members
High attention to detail and strong observational abilities
Effective problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
Commitment to RAPS' mission, vision, and no-kill values
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with dental procedures (COHAT)
Familiarity with IDEXX and EzyVet software
Registration with the BC Veterinary Technologists Association (asset, not required)
