Job Description

Canada West Veterinary Specialists (CWVS), a privately owned and operated, multi-disciplinary emergency and specialty hospital is looking for exceptional Veterinary Technicians to join our General Wards and Intensive Care Unit.

The first veterinary specialty hospital in Metro Vancouver, CWVS is a state-of-the-art Level VECCS level 1 and VetCOT certified facility. We have 30+ veterinarians in the following disciplines: emergency and critical care, surgery, neurology, radiology, internal medicine, and oncology. In addition to a rehabilitation department, 6 ORs, 2 isolation wards, and a newly redesigned ER, ICU, and Wards, we are equipped with 2 digital radiology suites, a new CT, and a 1.5T MRI.

JOB SUMMARY



This position is part of a centralized team, and responsible primarily for providing anesthesia support for specialty service procedures (Emergency, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Oncology, Radiology, Surgery). When not required to provide general anesthesia or other procedural support, the VT will provide support elsewhere as needed; i.e. ICU, ER, wards, specialty department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



Administer a range of sedative, anesthetic, and analgesic agents to patients, including intravenous and balanced anesthesia techniques. Proficiently monitor critical patients during anesthesia, including those classified up to ASA III-IV. Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain advanced monitoring equipment such as ECG, capnography, non-invasive and invasive blood pressure monitors (NIBP/IBP), and mechanical ventilators. Perform thorough physical examinations and patient assessments, with the ability to identify normal and abnormal vital signs. Accurately and promptly document anesthesia records, treatment plans, and medical notes using SmartFlow and ezyVet. Provide timely updates to primary clinicians regarding patient status and promptly communicate any concerns or changes in condition. Effectively relay patient updates and procedural summaries to Ward and ICU VTs to ensure seamless continuity of care. Develop a good working knowledge of commonly used medications in emergency and specialty practice settings. Perform essential technical skills, including IV catheter placement, venipuncture, urine collection (via cystocentesis or catheterization), and diagnostic imaging. Participation and interest in learning new skills, exploring new technologies, and additional training programs / rotations. Provide hands-on patient care and support to other hospital departments, including ER, Wards, and ICU, when not assigned to anesthesia or procedural duties.

Proficient in medical, surgical, and anesthetic terminology. Strong mathematical skills, including accurate drug dose calculations, CRI preparation, and medication / solution dilutions. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the veterinary team. Ability to collaborate and work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. Proficient with computer systems and telephone communication in a clinical setting. Consistently demonstrates professionalism, reliability, and a strong work ethic. Embraces a collaborative team environment, with openness to feedback and continuous improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE



Graduate of an accredited program for Veterinary Technologists or Technicians Demonstrated skills, experience and training that would qualify the individual for a position of responsibility providing general anesthesia Strong background in anesthetic procedures and protocols preferred Interest in, or completion of, a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) certification in Anesthesia & Analgesia is highly desirable

WORKING HOURS



Typically, weekday shifts comprising of 4 x 10-hour shifts Rotational GA On-Call Shifts (including weekends)
