As the Lead of Canfor Corporate Ventures, your role centers on spearheading our entry into the Ventures arena. Based in Vancouver, you\'ll undertake classic Venture tasks \xe2\x80\x93 from pinpointing and assessing strategic investments and external start-up partnerships to execution. You\'ll play a pivotal role in creating systems, governance, and processes for amplifying our fund endeavors. Collaborating closely with cross-functional stakeholders, you\'ll ensure harmony with our company\'s objectives, ethos, and overarching mission.

Your initial priority involves establishing a robust base for an expansive Ventures program. This entails delivering promising ventures and forging impactful partnership opportunities, laying the groundwork for future success.

A day in the life of the Venture Lead includes:

Corporate Venture Strategy

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive corporate venture strategy aligned with the company\'s long-term objectives, market trends, and growth opportunities with an emphasis on decarbonization and biogenic carbon opportunities
  • Identify emerging technologies for investment and partnership advancing both physical and digital decarbonization solutions
Corporate Venture systems & processes
  • Leverage learning from our participation in an existing Venture fund to develop systems and governance activities to assess, manage, evaluate investments
  • Recommend and implement appropriate investment committees (e.g., technical committees, investment committees, etc.)
  • Develop a balanced Ventures score card for assessing opportunities
Deal Sourcing and Evaluation
  • Leverage opportunities from our existing participation in a Venture fund and seek out novel investment opportunities and startup partnerships through networking, industry events, accelerator programs, and other relevant channels
  • Conduct thorough due diligence on potential ventures to assess their strategic fit, financial viability, and growth potential
Investment Decision Making
  • In collaboration with Head of Bio-innovation, present investment proposals and partnership opportunities to the executive leadership team and relevant stakeholders, providing clear and data-driven recommendations
  • Negotiate deal terms and structure agreements that align the interests of all parties involved
Venture Portfolio Management
  • Help design and execute a balanced Venture portfolio
  • As the portfolio grows, oversee the performance of venture investments and partnerships, tracking key metrics and milestones
  • Identify potential areas for growth and improvement within the portfolio companies and offer strategic guidance and support to help them succeed
Entrepreneurial Culture
  • Foster a culture of innovation, risk-taking, and collaboration within the organization to encourage intrapreneurship and idea generation from employees
  • Organize internal innovation challenges, hackathons, and workshops to promote creativity and entrepreneurship
Relationship Building
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including founders, investors, and industry leaders
  • Represent the company at relevant conferences, events, and industry forums to enhance the company\'s visibility within the startup ecosystem.
  • Establish and grow key partnerships within the broader ecosystem
For this role come equipped with:
  • Bachelor\'s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Engineering, or a related field
  • Proven experience (5 years) in venture capital, corporate venture, private equity, or related fields, with a track record of successful investments and partnerships
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, with experience leading cross-functional teams and driving results in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional analytical, financial modeling, and valuation skills
In a perfect world, you also possess an MBA or relevant advanced degree as well as excellent communication and negotiation skills. You also have the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders and you think outside the box.
