Maintaining our provincial highway infrastructure is no small job.

The Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotia\xe2\x80\x99s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, 4,100 bridges, and 9 provincial ferries. The Vehicle Transportation Inspection Division of Public Works is responsible for inspection and compliance of all vehicles that use our highways.

We inspire public confidence in the public passenger transportation service through education and enforcement of Acts and Regulations that pertain to commercial vehicle users in our province.


About Our Opportunity



Daily, the Mobile Inspector interacts with the commercial trucking industry, ensuring the safety of all road users and protecting the highway infrastructure of Nova Scotia.


Primary Accountabilities



As the Inspector, you are to verify commercial vehicle compliance, including safety, weight and dimension requirements. You are responsible to enforce specific Acts and Regulations with regard to commercial vehicles. You will act as a Special Constable; ensuring compliance with National Safety Code requirements and Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Standards.


Qualifications and Experience



High school completion plus eight (8) years of related experience in commercial transportation, vehicle repair or vehicle inspection is required; or an appropriate accreditation such as truck/bus transport repair certificate, automobile service technician certification plus five (5) years of related experience as a licensed tradesperson is required.
You must have a valid CVSA NASI Level I Inspector certification, and a minimum of two continuous years of experience in a vehicle compliance station, post most recent Inspector\xe2\x80\x99s Certification for CVSA NASI Level I.
You must be appointed as a Special Constable under the Nova Scotia Police Act.

You must also have completed a division-approved Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVO) training course.

A valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license with a clean driving record is required.

Strong analytical skills are required to read, interpret and understand various service and repair manuals, Acts, Regulations and technical standards governing the industry. Strong verbal communication skills are required in order provide roadside education to the industry.

You apply sound independent judgement to resolve complex issues. We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions



This job can be stressful! The successful candidate must have a proven track record of managing highly stressful situations in an extremely fast paced environment. You may also be exposed to fumes, scents, allergens, and adverse weather conditions. May include long hours driving including highway patrol activities. Frequent pulling, prying and lifting involving medium to heavy weight; working in difficult and/or awkward positions.

Pay Grade: TE 23 Salary Range: $2,262.38 - $2,669.67 Bi-Weekly
