Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Fleet Procurement and Support Services, the Vehicle and Equipment Inspector performs inspections and testing of new equipment, internal and external rentals; supervises testing, and evaluates modification/repairs to new equipment performed by both in-house and external vendors prior to acceptance. The responsibilities include overseeing inspections and communicating with vendors, researching and recommending quality control improvements, coordinating training and maintaining records.


The position also carries out specific related programs as assigned, including writing reports and working with many WFMA staff, including Contract Administrators, Clerks, Manufacturing Shop Supervisor, Shop Foreman, and Manufacturing staff. Completes data entry with the Fleet Management Software and signs off on inspections completed for payment process to be initiated by the Contract Administrator.

As the

Vehicle and Equipment Inspector,

you will:

Oversee inspections, vendor communication, and deficiency documentation Undertake research and recommend quality improvement activities. Coordinate training. Maintain and keep records and enter fleet maintenance data.

Your education and

qualifications include:

Red Seal Certification (Interprovincial Status) as a Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician, or as a Truck / Transport Mechanic, automotive mechanic, welder, state Manitoba certified Red Seal Journeyperson trades certificate.

Five (5) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy and/or light duty vehicles. Experience using Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel software.

Experience using Fleet Management Software.

Ability to operate and/or train other individuals on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment. Written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and write equipment inspection reports

Interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, manage time and meet tight deadlines. Analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop and recommend solutions.

Knowledge of the Occupational Hazards and Safety practices and regulations applicable to the position's area of work. Ability to read and interpret schematics, technical specifications and procedural drawings. Ability to work independently with a minimum amount of direct supervision.

Conditions of employment:

The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid. A Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the applicant or successful candidate at their expense. Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's license with the ability to obtain a Manitoba Class 3 Driver's license with air brake endorsement within 3 months. Must have a valid Manitoba Vehicle Inspection Certificate, and be certified to perform Manitoba Class III Vehicle inspections (MGI's). Must be able to travel when required to inspect Vehicles and Equipment off site, including out of City, Province or Country as necessary, in accordance with the City of Winnipeg Administrative Standard FM-006 "City Business Travel". Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position which include working at varying heights, confirmed spaces, bending, crawling, twisting, climbing, and lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. * Must be able to perform duties of the position outdoors and in all weather conditions.
