The Valve Technician is responsible for performing inspection, repair, testing, and maintenance of industrial valves and repair a range of mechanical valves, ensuring they function effectively within complex systems. This position will require work in both the company's shop and at customer sites. This role involves performing pressure tests, troubleshooting issues, and calibrating valves to meet operational standards while following strict safety protocols. The technician maintains comprehensive documentation and provides technical guidance to clients, emphasizing quality, safety, and customer satisfaction in all tasks. The role demands strong mechanical skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to deliver quality service in a timely manner.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE
Installation and Commissioning

  • Travel to client sites to install new mechanical valves, including safety valves. Ensure all valves are properly installed according to engineering blueprints and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Work with client engineers and technicians to integrate valves into larger piping and fluid systems, ensuring seamless operation with pumps, compressors, and other mechanical components.
  • Conduct hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure tests post-installation to confirm that all connections are secure and leak-free, and that valves function as intended under operational pressures.
Inspection and Maintenance
  • Perform scheduled inspections of mechanical valves in operation to identify wear, corrosion, or malfunction risks. This may include inspecting seals, gaskets, and fasteners, and checking for signs of misalignment, vibration, or cracking.
  • Execute preventative maintenance programs, such as lubrication, cleaning, and replacing worn-out parts like diaphragms, springs, or seals. Ensure compliance with manufacturer and industry standards.
Troubleshooting and Repairs
  • Use diagnostic tools and equipment such as ultrasonic testers, pressure gauges, or infrared thermometers to troubleshoot valve issues. Diagnose problems like stem leaks, seating issues, or actuator failures.
  • Respond to emergency repair requests from clients, assessing the situation quickly and applying effective repair methods, such as seal replacements, grinding or lapping valve seats, or replacing worn-out components.
  • When necessary, fabricate custom parts on-site to resolve urgent issues. This could involve machining, welding, or adjusting components to fit non-standard installations.
  • Work as an integral part of our production and repair team to support customer needs when not in the field
  • Provide suggestions to increase the efficiency of field and shop work.
  • Ability to discuss problems and solutions with stakeholders
Testing and Calibration
  • Perform functional tests on repaired or installed valves, including testing pressure relief valves to ensure they operate within specified limits. Verify smooth operation of control valves by simulating system conditions.
  • Adjust valve settings and control instrumentation to optimize system performance. Use specialized calibration equipment to set pressure and flow rates, ensuring systems meet design specifications and operational standards.
  • Ensure all testing and calibration processes meet local, national, and international standards. Document test results for regulatory inspections.
Documentation and Reporting
  • Maintain detailed logs of all work performed, including parts replaced, test results, and recommendations for future service. Ensure records are comprehensive for audit and regulatory compliance purposes.
  • Generate technical reports summarizing the condition of client valve systems, including an analysis of failures and suggested preventative measures. Provide a clear breakdown of work completed, with photos and data for client reference.
Client Interaction
  • Serve as a technical advisor for clients, explaining complex mechanical issues and offering solutions tailored to their operational needs. Recommend specific valve models or upgrades when necessary to enhance performance.
  • Required to perform maintenance services in Eastern Canada (Kingston, Ontario to New Brunswick)
  • Offer on-site training for client personnel, teaching them how to operate and perform basic maintenance on valves. Ensure that clients understand emergency procedures in the event of a valve failure.
  • Required to perform calibration, testing and diagnostics of Emerson and other pneumatic and electric actuators.
  • Perform diagnostics using Lifting Assist Devices (LAD), Valvelink and Flowscanner as well as other tools and repair of customer valves
  • Follow up with customers to ensure their continued satisfaction and future needs.
In-House Workshop
  • Inspect, repair, maintain, and test valves and associated equipment in the shop.
  • Diagnose issues and perform troubleshooting to ensure equipment reliability.
  • Complete accurate service reports and documentation within required timelines.
  • Adhere to safety protocols, company procedures, and customer site requirements.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in clean and safe condition.
  • Support shutdowns, emergency repairs, and planned maintenance activities as required.
Safety Compliance
  • Maintain a good standing, long-term professional relationship with customers.
  • Conduct thorough safety assessments before starting any work, identifying potential hazards such as high pressure, temperature extremes, or the presence of hazardous fluids. Implement control measures to mitigate these risks.
  • Utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hard hats, gloves, goggles, semi and/or full-face masks (after successfully completing a 'fit test' every 2 years), and flame-retardant clothing, while performing work in high-risk environments. Ensure all safety protocols are followed by team members.
  • Ensure safe handling of any hazardous materials during valve maintenance, including chemicals, gases, or high-temperature fluids. Follow proper disposal methods for contaminated materials.
  • Ensure compliance with all established health and safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Collaboration
  • Collaborate with client teams, such as engineers and plant operators, to ensure that valve systems are properly integrated into overall plant operations. Able to work during shutdowns or outages.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior technicians or apprentices. Offer hands-on training, share best practices, and ensure proper execution of repair or maintenance procedures.
  • Work alongside electricians, plumbers, and control system engineers to resolve multi-disciplinary mechanical issues, especially in complex environments like refineries, paper mills or power plants.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS TO BE SUCCESSFUL
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with mechanical valves, with a strong background in field service or maintenance roles.
  • Experience with mechanical valves would be considered an asset.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or certification in mechanical systems, plumbing, or a related field preferred.
  • Communication skills, written and verbal, in French.
  • Written and verbal communication skills in English would be considered an asset.
  • ASP Construction Certification
  • Valid driver's license
  • Knowledge of various valve types (gate valves, globe valves, ball valves, butterfly valves, safety valves, etc.).
  • Knowledge of mechanical and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, manuals, and schematics.
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Intermediate)
  • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Software (Introductory)
Working Conditions
  • Certain requirements related to lifting, pushing, pulling or holding loads.
  • Certain demands related to bending, climbing, crouching to perform checks or manual work, adopting uncomfortable or demanding positions for several minutes and/or working in difficult work environments.
  • Flexibility is required to work outside of normal working hours (evenings, weekends).
  • Travel is required (specifically to the United State for trainings).
  • Certain requirements related to remaining in the same position for long periods of time.
  • Capable to work in extreme tempertature (hot and cold).
  • Able to work long hours especially during shutdown season.
WORK LOCATION: Kirkland, QC, frequent travel across Eastern Canada
