The Utility Person (UTIL) plays a crucial role as a responsible professional who represents the best interest of Nch'?a?? in completing various tasks at the Sqomish Forestry LP Dryland Sort (DLS). The Utility Person will be responsible for log bucking, bundling, bundle truck driving and various other DLS/forestry tasks as assigned by the DLS Supervisor or Forestry Manager, while following all safety rules and regulations. The successful candidate will have a good understanding of chainsaw use and safety, as well as knowledge of log bucking, bundling and other DLS sort operations.
Duties, Responsibilities, Authority and Accountabilities
Log Bucking
Completes log bucking of all deliveries to the Sqomish DLS, as directed by the Scaler, DLS Supervisor or Forestry Manager
Bucks logs at grade/quality/sort intervals as designated by the Scaler
Maintains chainsaw and ensures good care of chainsaw and other associated equipment
Completes other chainsaw work as assigned by DLS Supervisor or Forestry Manager
Bundling
Bundles logs as assigned by DLS Supervisor or Forestry Manager
Drive bundle truck as required in a safe manner
Maintains bundling equipment and ensures good care of other associated equipment
DLS Utility Tasks
Completes various utility tasks at DLS as directed by DLS Supervisor or Forestry Manager, including but not limited to:
General clean up and maintenance
Water truck driving
Equipment clean up, greasing, fueling and general maintenance
Inventory and stocking
Supply pick up and drop off
Health and Safety
Understands and follows applicable WorksafeBC Acts and Regulations, Safe Work Procedures, Safe Work Practices, and Safety Rules,
Ensures that the operations are performed in a safe manner by following the Nch'?a? EHS Management system,
Uses/wears protective equipment, devices, and clothing as required,
Communicates and consults with EHS Manager as required.
Other
Perform other duties as required.
Reporting Responsibilities and Authorities from Supervisor
Reports to Forestry Manager
Supervised by DLS Supervisor
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Knowledge
High school or equivalent; Forestry industry knowledge would be an asset,
Chainsaw safety certification (or willing to acquire before starting work)
Heavy Equipment Operator designation would be an asset.
Skills
Ability to follow forestry and safety rules and regulations,
Must be a self-starter and be able to work with minimal supervision,
Ability to work independently within established guidelines and procedures and be able to cooperate with co workers and senior management,
High levels of integrity and ability to handle confidential information,
Strong organizational and time management skills to manage priorities and meet deadlines,
Willingness to multi-task, being flexible, and adapt to changing priorities,
Strong team player with solid verbal and written communication skills,
Experience
Minimum 2 years working experience in Forestry (preferred)
Minimum 2 years working experience in DLS operations (preferred)
Experience working with First Nations is an asset.
Special Requirements
Class 5 Driver License,
Clean Driving Abstract,
Willing to work additional hours as required,
Able to wear PPE as required
Working Conditions
Forestry working conditions,
Extended periods of driving, sitting, walking and chainsaw use
