What you'll do





Utility Fleet Mechanic (Truck and Transport Mechanic) at BC Hydro maintain, inspect, diagnose, repair, modify and outfit


BC Hydro vehicles. The BC Hydro fleet consists of 3,000 vehicles including passenger vehicles (e.g. cars, SUVs,


passenger vans), light vehicles (e.g. pick-up trucks, commercial vans, flat deck trucks), heavy vehicles e.g. man lifts, digger


derricks, crane trucks), mobile machines (e.g. fork lifts, self-propelled man lifts) and trailers (e.g. pole trailers, reel trailers,


utility trailers). Fleet Services delivers the service via a main maintenance garage, satellite workshops and mobile work


shops.




As an apprentice in this trade, you would:


Perform regular maintenance inspections conforming to regulatory requirements and Fleet Services practices mainly on
heavy equipment (heavy trucks, pickup trucks, vans, trucks with service bodies, forklifts, self-propelled man lifts, pole


trailers, reel trailers, utility trailers, tilt trailers, and highway tractor trailers)


Repair deficiencies discovered during maintenance inspections mainly on heavy equipment Diagnose and repair failures causing machine breakdowns mainly on heavy equipment Overhaul heavy equipment

What you bring





This trade will interest those who enjoy performing hands-on physical work. While upper body strength is required, both


men and women can develop this through a weight training program.




The successful candidate will have:


Graduated from high school with the following courses: English 12, Math 11 and Physics 11 / Science & Technology 11
(or equivalents).


Successfully completed an approved Truck and Transport Mechanic (Commercial Transport Vehicle Mechanic), Heavy
Mechanical, or Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Level 1, entry level trades training or foundation program


2 years of experience in the trade with work performed on heavy vehicles. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and familiarity with industrial tools/equipment Normal color vision A minimum of a valid BC Class 5 driver's license or equivalent; a Class 3 with air endorsement or higher (or willingness to
obtain) is preferred


Strong interpersonal skills to deal with both internal and external customers

What we offer




THE PROGRAM


The Utility Fleet Mechanic apprenticeship involves 48 months of on-the-job, working with mobile field mechanics and


classroom training. Graduation from the program will include successful completion of the Truck and Transport mechanic


red seal examination.

Graduated apprentices can apply on any vacancies for Utility Fleet Mechanic within BC Hydro, including mobile


opportunities.




THE LOCATION


During your apprenticeship, you will be assigned to Prince George Vehicle Garage or Vernon Vehicle Garage. You will be


required to do 4 to 5 rotations in alternate headquarters across the province for up to 3 months each during your


apprenticeship.

Apprentices earn 75% of the full trade rate with further increases during the apprenticeship. The apprentice pay rate is


$36.01; upon graduation as a journeyperson, the rate is $48.01. Additionally, we are committed to keeping our employees

pay, disability income, health and vision care, and dental benefits.




A condition of employment for this job once becoming a journeyperson is that you maintain your Driver's License: Class 3
with air endorsement




BC Hydro conducts pre-placement medical checks of applicants entering certain positions to help safeguard BC Hydro's
workplace. As part of the selection process, you may be required to demonstrate successful completion of a pre-placement


medical check.
