Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Utility Coordinator to support the planning and execution of civil infrastructure projects by identifying, managing, and coordinating utility relocations and adjustments. The Utility Coordinator will act as a liaison between project teams, utility owners, and municipal or provincial authorities, ensuring seamless integration of utility work into a variety of transportation and municipal engineering projects.

You like being a primary go to for all things utility coordination. You love to liaise and enjoy supporting and coordinating for a variety of projects. You like things streamlined and integrated. You are a systems thinker that sees the big picture and can see where everyone fits.

Your application must demonstrate:



Experience with the identification of utility conflicts and related coordination needs, ideally in relation to civil or municipal infrastructure projects. Experience working on multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects involving coordination of several partners. Strong knowledge of utility design, conflicts, and relocations. Ability to interpret civil and utility as-built drawings and design plans. Familiarity with the Utility Safety Partners location service and industry databases like AbaData. Familiarity with regulatory and permitting processes for utilities including proximity agreements, crossing agreements, etc. Familiarity with the land-based frameworks for utility placement such as rights of way, easements, line assignments, etc. Experience working with Land Agents and/or Legal Surveyors in relation to utilities is an asset. Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, etc.) and basic proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, GIS or other mapping software. Strong communication and negotiation skills for liaising with utility providers, municipalities, and contractors. Valid Class 5 Driver's License. A technical diploma or degree (Engineering, Engineering Technology, etc.) is an asset, but is not mandatory, as it is more important that the needed skillsets are demonstrated through practical experience. Understanding of municipal standards in Alberta (e.g., City of Calgary, Alberta Transportation, other municipalities).

A Little More About the Role

Utility Coordination and Management

Identify and assess the impact to existing utilities during the planning and design phases of infrastructure projects (e.g. municipal services, electrical, telecommunications, oil and gas pipelines, etc.). Identify and coordinate installation of new utilities required to support infrastructure or development projects. Develop utility coordination plans and relocation strategies in collaboration with internal teams and external parties. Coordinate with utility companies to review designs, obtain approvals, and ensure timely relocation or protection of utilities.

Stakeholder Liaison

Act as the main point of contact between utility providers, clients, contractors, other design consultants, and regulatory bodies. Facilitate utility conflict resolution through meetings, documentation, and technical negotiation.

Project Support and Documentation

Maintain accurate records of utility locations, correspondence, meeting minutes, and agreements. Support preparation of permit applications and assist with securing approvals related to utility work. Contribute to tender and construction documentation regarding utility-related scope and constraints.

Construction Phase Involvement

Monitor and support utility relocation progress during construction. Coordinate field inspections and resolve issues related to utility conflicts or delays.
