The Utilities department of the Infrastructure Services division has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the position of CUPE Utilities Equipment Operator 3. Reporting to the Equipment Foreperson, this position offers 76.5 hours biweekly starting as soon as possible.



The work of this class involves safe and efficient operation, servicing and minor maintenance primarily related to the water distribution, water treatment, wastewater collection and wastewater treatment infrastructure managed by the Utilities department and in accordance with Federal, Provincial, and municipal regulations and standards. The work focusses on heavy mobile construction and maintenance equipment such as hydraulic backhoes, front-end loaders, track and rubber tire excavators, single axle dump trucks and sewer vactor/jetrodding truck (tandem axle) and skilled pipelaying.



Candidates will possess a grade 12 diploma supplemented by related experience in heavy equipment operation. EOCP certification in Water Distribution 1 and Wastewater Collection 1 is desirable. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Candidates must have sound knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of underground water and sewer services and facilities; skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the work performed; knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and equipment applicable to maintenance and repair of work performed; considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards, proper safety precautions and environmental regulations applicable to the work; and ability to use Microsoft 365 and learn new and changing technology. Candidates must also possess sufficient physical strength and coordination to perform manual work outdoors in all weather, including snow clearing duties.



The successful candidate demonstrates a mechanical aptitude with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public and a commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace. As a requirement of the position, the successful applicant must hold a valid BC driver's license Class 5, Class 3 w/air endorsement, and the ability and willingness to obtain class 1 driver's license. Candidates must provide a satisfactory drivers abstract prior to beginning employment.



This position works 76.5 hours bi-weekly at a rate of $37.73 per hour. Employees in the Utilities department shall normally work a schedule consisting of 8 days of work in a 14-day period. Each day of work shall be 10 hours exclusive of a one-half (1/2) hour lunch period.
