Double Take Thrift Store is a Yonge Street Mission social enterprise that is known as a community resource where gently used clothing can be purchased at affordable prices. Located in the downtown east end of Toronto, we work to provide a dignified and enjoyable shopping experience to a diverse group of customers. We are committed to lowering our waste and improving our environmentally sustainable practices, and operate an Upcycling Studio in-store. Here, volunteers create new products out of old material to both raise funds for YSM and keep textile waste out of landfills.

Double Take is seeking a part-time Upcycling Specialist to provide product design and project management support in our Upcycling Studio. We are looking for a highly creative and organized individual to design new products and develop a project schedule. The ideal candidate will be adaptable, eager to improve processes, and passionate about social change and community empowerment in line with Double Take's values. They should also be social media savvy and possess the communication skills to effectively work alongside a diverse group of colleagues and volunteers. This is a 6 month contract, with the possibility of extension.

Responsibilities:



Creating and implementing a plan to design and produce upcycled products using discarded material Providing training to staff and volunteers on sewing and upcycling projects Assisting with planning and implementing community workshops on sewing and mending Assisting with social media photos and videos, including tutorials in collaboration with other staff Maintaining proper organization and cleanliness of the space Setting up and operating the POS at Double Take Upcycling booth at markets and pop-up events Assisting with regular store operations as needed (tidying, cashiering, receiving donations) Assisting with market research and/or sales analysis Providing excellent customer service and a welcoming environment to all Adhering to all safety and security policies and procedures

Qualifications:



The successful candidate will have the following skills and training:

Demonstrated creative skills (sewing, up-cycling, problem solving) Flexible and dynamic team player, with an ability to work with a high degree of independence Understanding and experience working with people from diverse populations, including various cultures, religions, those with varying abilities, mental health challenges, etc. Some post-secondary experience in fashion or design preferred Good verbal communication and teaching skills Customer service experience an asset Demonstrated commitment to YSM's/Double Take's mission and values Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends; a police check will be required
