Indigenous Teacher Education Program (ITEP Community-Based) Courses
CURR 383
Elementary Mathematics - 0.50 credit course
Designed to help beginning teachers to (i) examine how children learn mathematics; (ii) develop a positive attitude toward and an interest in mathematics; (iii) teach mathematics with problem solving as the primary focus; (iv) understand the elements of planning and assessing a comprehensive mathematics curriculum; and (v) establish a classroom environment that supports children's learning of mathematics. Models experiences that help teacher candidates to construct personal knowledge of mathematical techniques, skills and processes through meaningful opportunities to learn (including the application of information technology).

Weekend Schedule: Winter 2026 (Jan 10, Feb 6-7, Mar 7-8, and Mar 27-28)
Approx. Enrolment: 20
Prepares Indigenous Teacher Education candidates to include Indigenous curriculum as part of their classroom teaching. Explores Indigenous community based curriculum development; a review of current Indigenous curriculum packages and other resources; curriculum planning and evaluation. An experiential learning approach with aspects of the course applied during the candidates' practice teaching rounds. Practicum experiences are explored during class sessions with such reflections providing the basis for further learning in the areas of curriculum planning and evaluation.

ITEP Qualifications
Successful teaching experience. Thorough knowledge of Ontario schools, curricula, and policies, including expertise regarding both adaptation of instruction for exceptional learners, and equity and inclusion. Demonstrated interpersonal skills and teaching ability. Ability to collaborate and work with faculty members, staff, and teacher candidates of diverse backgrounds. Related graduate degree preferred, or equivalent (extensive experience of relevance to the position) may be considered. If applicable, proof that you are a member in good standing with the provincial teacher certification organization (e.g., OCT). Knowledge of Indigenous traditions, culture, and language, along with work experience in Indigenous education settings, particularly First Nation schools, preferred. Indigenous ancestry preferred.
Experience in using onQ/D2L or other online classroom platforms/learning management systems (Moodle, Blackboard, Canvas). Ability to use the learning management system (onQ/D2L) tools to interact with students. For example, the ability to participate in classroom discussion boards, grade students' discussion contributions, grade assignments. Working knowledge of current online technologies and social media.

If your classroom teaching has occurred within the last 5 years, a reference letter from a school administrator from the last school you taught at, and/or a letter from a board official (e.g., Superintendent from the school district you taught, and the names and contacts of two referees). Alternatively, if your teaching has not been within the past 5 years, please include two letters of reference.
c) course evaluations and/or teaching assessments should be submitted as part of your teaching dossier.
