Position Summary




The Department of Physics seeks an energetic and organized person who is committed to high-quality undergraduate education to serve as a temporary Undergraduate Laboratories Coordinator. Reporting to the UGL Academic director, the Undergraduate Laboratories Coordinator will coordinate and provide frontline teaching support for junior and senior undergraduate laboratories by instructing undergraduate labs, supervising and training teaching assistants, coordinating and writing laboratory manuals and the laboratory classes, developing new online and in-person labs and new lab curricula, dealing with undergraduate issues in the labs, scheduling labs for approximately 5000 student registrations per year, assisting with grading labs, creating and monitoring Canvas sections, checking for academic honesty, communicating with students, and keeping up to date with modern laboratory education theory.

Lab Coordinator for junior/senior undergraduate labs: In consultation with the academic director, provide technical support for junior and senior undergraduate labs, develop and maintain new pedagogical and experimental contents for undergraduate labs as needed. Manage schedule for lab spaces and TA duties. Train and supervise the Graduate Teaching Assistants in these undergraduate laboratory classes. Lead in person or online meetings to discuss experiments, grading, and demonstrating techniques, equipment, and software used in the laboratories. Create and participate in new TA orientations ("bootcamps") held by the department. Monitor performance of Teaching Assistants. Collect, collate and distribute the final laboratory grades provided by Teaching Assistants. Create and maintain Canvas courses. Physics Educational and Outreach Activities: help with high school visits and talks. Coordinate curriculum development with stakeholders. Develop electronic learning material for undergraduate labs. Create/maintain electronic grade books for labs using course delivery software (e.g. Canvas) and participate in outreach events and initiatives (e.g. Open House). Develop new in-person and "do it at home" labs. May need to instruct undergraduate laboratory classes. Prepare short lectures to explain equipment and procedures and highlight the theory required for the demonstrated experiments. Explain the evaluation of lab exercises. Mark written laboratory reports in senior labs. Be available outside lab time to answer questions related to the lab. Ensure Teaching Assistants are present and on time for labs (online or in-person). Proofread lab manuals and/or web based materials for selected classes. Reorganize and revise manuals on a yearly basis and correct any errors found. Clarify wording of experiments as needed so students can better understand the manual. Author new content as necessary. Set up and troubleshoot equipment in junior and senior labs. In consultation with other UGL technical staff, set out lab equipment for use by students in assigned rooms and remove and store equipment when the experiment is over. Other duties as required. Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Experimental Physics. Experience with experimental techniques and instrumentation in various fields of physics. Experience with general computer software including Google documents, surveys, and worksheets. Proficiency in programming using Python. Ability to communicate with adults of all ages and of multicultural and multilingual backgrounds. Good organizational skills. Ability during the teaching term to work a schedule to accommodate the department's evening lab schedule.
