Ultrasonic Machine Operators are responsible for operation and overall maintenance of the portable Rail Flaw Detector unit and to gather data and identify flaws within the rail.

The main duties include but are not limited to:

  • Supervising scheduling operations and overhaul maintenance of the portable Rail Flaw Detector
  • Monitoring the test data and making instrumentation corrections to ensure integrity of data and identification of flaws
  • Conducting the calibration, maintenance and repairs of the rail flaw unit, identify and report the defects found and maintain data integrity by following appropriate monitoring and maintenance schedules
  • Reducing derailments by finding internal flaws
Employees must be self directed and conditions will require that he/she work alone in the effective and safe performance of work.

Basic qualifications include:
  • Minimum 1 year working for the railroad, with demonstrable knowledge of engineering operations, and classifications of rails
  • Hi-rail qualified
  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • Possess a valid medical card
  • Must be qualified CROR or willing and able to qualify
  • Prior practical experience with Ultrasonic knowledge is an asset
  • Must be qualified in ultrasonic testing or willing and able to qualify
  • Strong computer skills, with working knowledge of Microsoft package, i.e. Excel, Word
  • Prior role utilizing technical and practical knowledge of electrical, electronic and computer maintenance would be an asset
  • ASNT Ultrasonic Levels I and II or willing and able to qualify
  • Track inspection qualified (TIG)
  • TIS (Track Inspection System) and MTS (Mobile Time Sheet) trained and experienced
  • Must be able to safely lift 50 lbs
