UACC Clinical VeterinarianPrimary Purpose:
The UACC Clinical Veterinarian oversees, coordinates and provides diagnostic and clinical veterinary care for laboratory and teaching animals, provides research support to investigators, and ensures regulatory compliance with all applicable guidelines, regulations, and policies pertaining to the use of research, teaching, and production animals. In this regulatory capacity, the veterinarian participates in Animal Use Protocol (AUP) development, and implementation.Nature of Work:
The UACC Clinical Veterinarian reports to the University Veterinarian and works closely with the UACC, UACC Veterinarians (University Veterinarian, UACC Clinical Veterinarians, and Post-Approval Review Veterinarians), animal care staff and animal users to ensure a harmonized program for the delivery of veterinary services and animal user support to the university\'s animal care and use program. They provide clinical care to laboratory animals, oversees and assists with animal health monitoring, quarantine, importation, and surgical programs, and works with the other UACC Veterinarians to ensure that all animal care and use is conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) and other applicable regulations, policies, and laws.The UACC Clinical Veterinarian uses their specialized knowledge of laboratory animal medicine and science to assist faculty with animal-based research endeavors at all stages of the process. They advise on animal use protocol development, assists with development and delivery of the education and training programs and provides research support. Collaborative research opportunities are encouraged.There are considerable pressures in this fast-paced and high-volume environment characterized by continuous change, shifting priorities and frequent interruptions. Competing deadlines and multi-tasking are the norm. The incumbent is required to work within a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision, demonstrate adaptability and flexibility in the face of changing demands, and generate and communicate new ideas and suggestions to improve the quality of animal care or provision of program services.ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Supports the University Veterinarian and works collaboratively with the other UACC Veterinarians (UACC Clinical Veterinarians and Post-Approval Review Veterinarians) in the management of veterinary services and oversight of facilities for all animals used in research, teaching, testing and production at the University of Saskatchewan, ensuring a harmonized program for provision of optimal veterinary care.
• Ensures compliance with guidelines and policies of the CCAC and other applicable regulations, policies, and best practices and assists the University Veterinarian with maintaining uniform policies and procedures across campus
• Works with the University Veterinarian to resolve animal care and use issues promptly and collaboratively while maintaining positive interactions between stakeholders; builds positive relationships and collaborations across campus.
• Serves as Facility Veterinarian for multiple facilities: establishes and maintains a comprehensive clinical program for diverse species in their care, including sentinel and quarantine programs, vendor screening, oversight of animal import and export, and diagnostics. This includes shared twenty-four hour emergency \xe2\x80\x9con call\xe2\x80\x9d duties as well as occasional scheduled non-traditional business hour duties.
• Performs animal facility site visits, addressing animal health and welfare concerns, assisting with SOP development, reviewing veterinary programs and ensuring adequate record-keeping and monitoring. Provides oversight and guidance to technical and animal care staff.
• Provides assistance with AUP development, anesthesia, surgical, post-op care, and technical support when requested for research and teaching activities using animals; develops humane intervention points and clinical monitoring; ensures best practices.
• Oversees the preventive medicine and enrichment programs for animals used in research and teaching.
• Works with the UACC Animal User Training Technician to develop and deliver training for animal users, students, residents, animal care staff and technical staff in the humane care and use of laboratory animals.
• Supports veterinary student and postdoctoral training in laboratory animal medicine and pathology.
• Serves as a voting member of the UACC, chairs sub-committees as needed, and serves as a voting member of the Animal Research Ethics Board.
• Ensures cost recovery of billable time and supplies expended in support of research projects; identifies cost saving initiatives within the office and communicates recommendations.
• Serves as delegate to the University Veterinarian during their absence.
• Pursues continuing education opportunities in order to further professional development through increasing skills and knowledge; pursues or maintains American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Board Certification.
• Other duties as assigned by the University Veterinarian and UACC.

QualificationsEducation:
Applicants must possess a D.V.M. and eligibility for veterinary licensure in the Province of Saskatchewan. They will have training/experience in laboratory animal medicine. Training and experience, particularly graduate training, in laboratory animal medicine, science, microbiology, pathology, statistical methods, surgery, and research methodology is preferred. Training/experience in laboratory animal medicine is preferred, however candidates from non-laboratory animal disciplines, clinical practice, or non-traditional routes are encouraged to apply if they have a strong interest in laboratory animal medicine and science. Board certification or eligibility as a Diplomate, ACLAM would be an asset.Experience:
Applicants will have several years of experience as a clinical veterinarian working in animal-based research or private clinical practice. The ideal candidate will have several years of experience as a laboratory animal veterinarian in an academic or research institution with a broad range of animal-based research and teaching. Clinical and surgical experience with a wide variety of species. Experience with Animal Biosafety Level 2 and higher would be preferred. A broad knowledge of academic structure and culture and knowledge of animal ethics research policies and processes at the University of Saskatchewan would be considered assets.Skills:
The successful candidate will have excellent knowledge of the regulations, guidelines, and policies surrounding the use of animals in research, teaching, and testing in Canada; knowledge of the principles of humane animal care and treatment; and a broad understanding of the use of animals in biomedical research and teaching. The ideal candidate will possess sound judgement and effective interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. They will have a proven ability to demonstrate integrity, professionalism, tact and diplomacy in interactions with a wide variety of people and organizations both internal and external to the university. Strong computer skills including proficiency using spreadsheets, word processing, and database software (e.g. Microsoft Office). The successful candidate will be able to effectively manage their time and prioritize duties in a fast-paced environment; interact effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse community; work under stressful conditions including critical situations; demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision; the ability to identify issues and provide suggestions and guidance on improvements and changes; ability to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment; and work independently and cooperatively.The successful applicant will be subject to a training and probationary period prior to working independently if they are inexperienced in any aspect of the position.This position is in the scope of the Administrative and Supervisory Personnel Association.Department: Research Ethics & Infrastructure
