Tutoring Program
Riverbend ROCKS provides one-on-one and group tutoring for all subjects and grade levels (including adult ESL tutoring) to members of our community free of charge.
Our group tutoring program is split into three groups:
Group tutoring for younger children (ages 6-8):
Structured sessions with a focus on building fundamental skills in English and Mathematics
Group tutoring for older children (ages 9-11):
Structured sessions with a focus on developing deeper understandings of core concepts in English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies
Group tutoring for youth (ages 12-19):
Less structured, drop-in sessions providing youth with the time and space to complete their own work with assistance from our tutors
Role Description
Under the supervision and guidance of the Riverbend ROCKS Coordinator-Children and Youth Programming, you will be responsible for developing and delivering one-on-one and group tutoring sessions. Responsibilities and tasks will include:
Developing a wide range of educational activities for group tutoring sessions with a focus on cultivating foundational skills
Providing one-on-one tutoring support for students at various grade levels and abilities, tailored to their individual needs
Providing one-on-one ESL tutoring support for adults in the community, tailored to their individual needs
Fostering a positive and effective learning environment
Adapting educational methods to fit the needs of your students
Maintaining open communication with the Coordinator-Children and Youth Programming by providing regular progress reports and taking part in regular debriefing sessions
Acting as a role model and mentor for students, helping them develop strong academic practices and a positive attitude toward learning
Demonstrating empathetic listening, an openness to diverse viewpoints, and non-judgmental engagement approaches.
Qualifications
Proven experience working as a tutor or educator
Completed or in-progress BEd, BA, BSc, or equivalent
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
1 year (minimum) experience working with children or youth
Strong understanding of teaching methods and classroom management techniques
Passion for education and child/youth development
